At Hull Uni myself(mid to late 70's)Lived in Cottingham too;pleasant litle suburb.Arnott's fadges were gigantic barm cake sandwiches, sold from the back of a shop in the small hours.Nellies in Beverly was a pub run by two incredibly ancient ladies, who sold beer from a table.
Spring Bank area was best avoided after dark, but the town wasn't too bad in those days.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-627081175329856970.post-80960555141100578932012-07-13T12:47:03.487+01:002012-07-13T12:47:03.487+01:00Ex-Hull Uni I am, back in the early-mid seventies....Ex-Hull Uni I am, back in the early-mid seventies.

No 'umber bridge then, like.

Back of beyond. On the road to nowhere. Like going back to the early 60s. A distinctive accent, distinctive and good beer. A bacon fadge at 4.00am. Those were the days.

I particularly remember boozy dockers chasing us round the football pitch trying to kick 4 kinds of sh*t out of us. Fortunately we were young and fit.

Men-only snugs, its own telephone company, a world apart. Great years in a special place. Actually, I lived in Cottingham (the posh part).

The librarian (who you'd spot hiding behind columns in the library and observing people) was the guy whose parents fuck*d him up.

True, it was easy to get beaten up on a Friday night, but as always you just stopped going to such places and took the train to Nellie's in Beverly.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-627081175329856970.post-41592012184521354882012-07-13T11:56:53.129+01:002012-07-13T11:56:53.129+01:00Typical? My family and extended family are from Hull and ALL are in fulltime employment with such professions as photographers, doctors practice managers, building project manager, solicitor, university administrator, self-employed and so on. Virtually all have their own homes except for the younger members who are just starting out and are renting until they can save enough to buy. None are on benefits. Typical Hull couple indeed! ... The city centre had some fine old buildings, some nice real ale pubs and the people were very friendly.

A friend who knows it well told me civilisation heads for the hills after the shops close though.staybrytenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-627081175329856970.post-57604742741147132332012-07-13T11:16:08.881+01:002012-07-13T11:16:08.881+01:00"Was she truly wafted here from Paradise?
