If he claimed to be upset or offended at this, would I have committed a crime? Free speech is a basic tenet of civilisation, but that is tempered by the respect that any person should consider when referring to a third party. It would be using my freedom of speech to put on the internet that your wife, spouse, partner, etc, is a drug riddled, Aids carrying, prostitute. However, that would not only cause you offence but by making such a comment, available to anyone with access to the web, I would not only be ignoring the respect I owe to someone I have never met, but could be construed as offensive and I would therefore be subject to current legislation aided, no doubt, by a complaint made by you. One of the problems of today is that technology often outstrips the possibility of specific circumstances which may arise when new legislation is being drafted, promoted, debated and introduced. Unless you were being facaetious, and in which case, ignore everything I have written, Ahmed stepped over the boundary between freedom of speech and hate mail and, IMHO, should have been given a custodial sentence. But then, he is Asian, making derogatory remarks about white people, so that's all right then. Turn it all around, and half the courts in the country would be in flames if the offender were allowed to walk.
PenseivatAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-627081175329856970.post-77787971327035498802012-10-09T14:43:26.177+01:002012-10-09T14:43:26.177+01:00Here's the latest in the prosecution of free s...Here's the latest in the prosecution of free speech:

http://news.sky.com/story/995338/facebook-man-spared-jail-over-comments
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
