Really, Kate…?

Kate Allen, director of Amnesty International UK, has a piece in ‘CiF’ today regarding the control order imposed on one Mahmoud Abu Rideh, a Palestinian refugee, and how he has been affected by this:
…he is a truly desperate man. He told me that he already feels dead inside. At one point he even showed us a packet of razor blades and explained how he planned to go to a park and slash the veins in his wrists and throat. At another point he said he wanted to throw himself in front of a Central line train.
Yeah, he’s gonna have to wait until Friday, though….

  1. Given he is the subject of a control order, I am not sure I want him committing suicide on the tube! (Or on a bus)

  2. The control order system..heavy on manpower, heavy on cost, and we won't let the bloke leave the country although the authorities don't want him here...weird.

I notice the report said;"At another point he said he wanted to throw himself in front of a Central line train."

Not A train...did he just get an alleged message out?

  3. If he finds a central line train, could he let us know?

  4. What this poor soul?

He's a terrorist who has been on benefits with his wife and five kids. They should send the lot of them back home. They'd have something to complain about then.

  5. Isn't the problem that they cannot deport them, hence the control orders?

The legal system prevents deportation; it prevents control orders. They seem awfully keen to get them back on the streets.

It's a possibility - although Kate embellishing her quotes is another!

    Agreed.

Well, they probably don't live anywhere near those streets themselves. Why should they care?
