This happens to us every blimmin year, bairns getting bored during the hols, and winding up drowned in the sea, or a gravel pit somewhere.
I see them when I walk along our beach. Often, they are visitors. Come to the coast for a wee holiday. You see them playing on the sandbanks, oblivious to the dangers of the incoming tide, or a sea fret that can come rolling in so fast you lose your bearings and don't know where the dry land is anymore.
A lot of local folk don't interfere anymore. They feel uncomfortable about confronting other people's children, telling them to do as they are told and move to the safe zone.
My neighbour came back from walking her dog this morning, complaining about kiddies, some of them not much more than seven, playing right next to the railway line.
She didn't dare say anything to them, so she trudged all the way to the signal box to report it.
So now, instead of being nagged into submission by wise old biddies, little-uns have become another matter for the police and the railway police to attend to.
This paranoid obsession with peds under the bed, is making children much less safe. It has wiped out their first line of defence.

Another legacy of the 'paedo panic' that's having unfortunate consequences...
