Well, she's up in court:
A black councillor who called an Asian colleague a ‘coconut’ during a meeting is facing a possible prison sentence after being charged with racially aggravated harassment.Well, well, well...
In July last year, Mrs Brown was suspended for a month by the council's Standards Committee for using ‘offensive and abusive language’.Doing sterling work for her constituents, I'm sure...
But this was overturned on appeal by the Adjudication Panel for England Tribunal Service in September and Mrs Brown remains in her post pending the outcome of her appeal.
It's Bristol Shitty Council. You have to expect this sort of thing.
ReplyDeleteThe very idea of being jailed for such an insult is simply wrong. No-one has a right NOT to be offended. I'm sick and tired of this bloody nonsense!
ReplyDeleteTo be fair to Ms Brown, 'coconut' is not a term of racial abuse. it is a term used by one coloured person to insult another coloured person who has sold out to Whitey.
ReplyDeleteAlso, what Chalcedon says.
'Coconut' is a term I've seen used by Yazza a couple of times, and she I think applied it to south Asians like the ethnically aspirational 'Coopers' (aka Kumars) who turned up occasionally in 'Goodness Gracious Me' sketches.
ReplyDeleteTo Cllr Brown, or indeed Yazza, any Indian woman who becomes a Tory councillor probably becomes a 'coconut' by default. To join the party of Churchill (who was very rude about Indians in general)you must implicitly be 'in denial' of your 'roots', as Cllr Brown pontificates.
Coconut is surely derogatory towards white people as it implies there;s something bad about being white.
ReplyDeleteNothing quite like a game of 'diversity poker'

ReplyDeleteOh, I agree. But since Brown is in the forefront of the identity politics movement, it's immense gfun seeing her hoist on her own petard...
