There Are No Words...

The defence added that the boy now had a team of social and care workers supervising him.
Anyone surprised at that..?

  1. Julia, I sometimes get the impression that you can be a tad sceptical about the therapeutic benefits of social work intervention. I for one am sure that after a few intensive sessions with a Guardian-reading graduate in Victim Studies from one of our fine Polyversities he'll be as good as new.

  2. I'm sure the results will be the best that can be produced, and will be just as good as those produced by any UK social services team.

Trevor, I think the phrase you are looking for is 'As good as he ever was'?

  3. And speaking of the help that social services can provide ...

Islamic social worker 'told Muslim mother to move to Bangladesh or lose children to Christianity'Faatien Le Jardin, a social worker for Merton's Children in Need team in south London, allegedly told the mother that she should leave the country to prevent her children being placed with English foster parents who "would make them Christian".

The General Social Care Council heard that Le Jardin offered to help her rig a urine test, while she also suggested that the woman's disabled 14-year-old daughter could have been impregnated by her father when she put on weight.

Oh, yes, that one was a real eye-opener. I've a post queued up on it.

I think it was Woman on a Raft who provided the courtnewsuk.co.uk link. Very illuminating...

You may care (take blood pressure medicine first) to trawl round the General Social Care Council (gscc.org.uk) disciplinary section.

I'm just having a rummage through it as there is a persistent argument that a number of crooks become social workers for much the the same reason as robbers go after banks: it's where the money is.

Q: What do the GSCC do about it when they find out? Deep breath.

A:Jagroop Liddar (Six page PDF, but it's big print.)

Readers may care to compare this with what happened to Maxine Carr who was taken apart by the CPS for telling fibs in order to get minor service jobs in local shops, a fish-packing factory and then as a classroom assistant. We all know how her story worked out.

I'm not arguing for sympathy for her, just pointing out that one person faced determined criminal investigation and prosecution on the basis of obtaining pecuniary advantage by deception, whereas the other is merely sacked and given a strongly-worded letter warning them their details are going to be passed to the new ISA.
