The ‘Indy’ Goes For A Godwin

Adrian Hamilton in the ‘Indy’ gamely goes to bat for the discredited theory of multiculturalism:
Multiculturalism was once a term of tolerance, an acceptance of difference in an increasingly cosmopolitan and urbanised western world.
That’s what it might have been intended to be, certainly, by a few well-meaning individuals. It was only in operation, and due to inevitable mission creep, that it became the utterly-loathed policy that now stunts true progress.
Today it has become just a convenient label which politicians can use to assault immigration.
Aha! Another Open Borders advocate…
Having invited immigrants in by the millions to fill a labour gap in an expanding market – just as Britain did after the Second World War – the governments and society that welcomed their arrival now think that they should conveniently disappear, taking their wives, their children, their benefit needs and their political antagonisms with them.
Funny you should mention their ‘political antagonisms’, Adrian. Do you actually read your own newspaper?

Still, maybe groups of Muslims calling for the murder of other groups of Muslims adds a vibrant dash of exciting, exotic culture to sleepy Kingston-upon-Thames, eh?

Forget morris-dancing and the Changing of the Guard, Third World religious grievance is the new black, baby!
With her fast-falling poll rating and fraying party loyalty, it was little wonder that the German Chancellor finally seized this opportunity to up her voter-approval figures and try and breathe new life into her dying party. Little wonder but hardly admirable. Dispense with all the finer analysis of political advantage, forget the excuse that mainstream politicians must express the bubbling concerns of their constituents
If they don’t do so, what are they there for?

We here in the UK and in most other European countries have opted for representative democracy. Do you need me to define that word ‘representative’ for you?
…and recognise what is happening here.
So, tell us. What is happening here?
The attack on "multiculturalism" is just a mask for expressing prejudices that would have been regarded as unacceptable and unrepeatable a decade ago – that the "guestworkers" were basically welfare scroungers, that they didn't and wouldn't subscribe to the culture of their hosts, that they were less educated and less educable than the majority "whites," that they somehow resented and challenged social values based on culture, language and the Christian religion.
Ding ding ding! Here comes that Godwin!
All across Western Europe there is a gathering chorus of concern on the migrant issue.
Exactly. And our representatives are acting on that. That’s all.
…it is significant that the language being used is the language of racism of the 1930s – that it contains and implies attitudes of ethnic purity and cultural superiority, alongside xenophobia, which are dangerous in their logic and potentially extreme in their emotion.
Hmm, the 1930s, the 1930s…

You might want to actually mention the 'N' word (no, not that one - only rappers can use that now), just in case the people reading this have recently been through the British educational system and haven't a clue what you're alluding to.
The belief that the children of immigrants would become more like their neighbours remains true, but in doing so they have taken on a desire for self-identification which has, in individual cases, proved violent.
But hey, what’s a few honour-killings, acid-scarrings and 7/7 terrorist attacks, eh? Those are just individual cases!

So, what will resolve this awful crisis, Adrian?
The real problem with the multicultural debate is not the critics, however. Politicians will always seek routes to populist votes. It is better that the views are aired in public rather than whispered in private. The true worry is the lack of voices to come out in defence of toleration, the paucity of figures ready to defend the values of an open society and to take the battle back into the opponent's court, forcing Mrs Merkel and her like to define just what they think immigrants are doing or threatening to do and just what the politicians would wish, or force, them to do instead.
Ah. More leftists to start braying in every online forum, TV show and newspaper column. Yup, that’ll help, I’m sure.

But you might want to change some of their talking points, Adrian. They are - frankly - so worn out and debunked it's like going into battle without the proper resources...

  1. I think their little multiculti world is falling apart around their ears, not even the immigrant "pets" want to play nice anymore, plus the natives (EDL) are starting to revolt

  2. Multi-culti fails because it is the construct of dimwits. Leftwing dimwits, mostly, who as usual completely misunderstand what people are really like. They want people to be some engineered, approved and essentially uncritical mass. You must accept what it good for you because you must do what you are told by greater intellects than yours.

We have read the colossal vanities of Marx, we admire murderers like Mao. We faint at the sight of Che posters, we laugh at allusions to Bushhitler.

But the left struggles with the concept of people having independent opinions. Multi-culti was meant to be heaven on earth, but it did not take account of what people are like. And the one thing people here did not like was that people came here to remain steadfast in the refusal to be part of Britain.

I cannot comment on other nations, but in Britain there is a tendency to accept people who are happy to be part of our society.

Yet in the multi-culti world people were applauded for refusing to integrate and encouraged to stay separate from the host nation. We were meant to enjoy the differences without asking why they continue to want to be apart from us, why they (in some clear cut cases) actively want to be our enemy.

These people bring their native customs (some of which involves killing to preserve 'honour'), largely only speak their language and were given leave to exclude other groups, and all the while demanding we begin to do what they want. The ordinary people (so despised by the dogmas of socialism, as always) began to ask why this was.

So we, the people who were willing to accept and adjust, were told we are not accepting and adjusting fast enough. If we raised our voices in protest we were labelled as reactionary or something-phobic or simply given an -ist designation. It is so easy to do, to sneer at your own people.

We neatly became the problem. The leftwingers who scurry about in the dark of the socialist-leaning media condemn us openly but never condemn the ones who actively divide from us. It is our fault, and we must toe the line.

Multi-culti was a way of beating us down, but it is failing. So the media and the liberal 'artists' who are so cutting edge in their criticisms of capitalism and the national identity, so dismissive of the ordinary people who dare to ask questions, so loud in their championing of the dangerous and the unstable, will rally round.

They tell us to be more what they want us to be, and enjoy the fact that there are areas of cities that are becoming ghettos and no-go areas.

Your culture is deemed small and insignificant by the progressives, so obey ye little ones!

Roll that one round your tongue for just a little longer. They've become violent in the process of becoming like us. Because of course gun-toting gangsters are as unknown in Jamaica as bomb-planting fundamentalists are in Pakistan. Sheer genius!

  4. Multiculturalism: The process by which a government takes a mixed population slowly coming to terms with their differences and makes damn sure that doesn't happen.

  5. Multiculturalism and immigration are not really the same thing...

Let's not mix up 'a distinctly lefty desire to have everyone look, act and be the same OR ELSE our social engineering plans won't line up with the party spreadsheets' with 'people moving about as is their right'.

Andy Hamilton probably hasn't quite grasped that subtlety, but he's not the only one in the world.

  6. "Having invited immigrants in by the millions to fill a labour gap in an expanding market " Hey Aidrian, not in my name!

When growing up in north London in the 70's there were immigrants scattered around fairly randomly but a while ago I was chatting with a second or third generation Greek Cypriot who told me that her community was now concentrated in a particular area while that district was for the Caribbeans, that one for the Somalis, the Indians lived in that place while somewhere else was for the Serbians and etc and etc.

That is what multi-culti did and it will surely end in tears just like the last time nazi socialists created ghettos.

  7. "I think their little multiculti world is falling apart around their ears..."

There are certainly big cracks in that dam, and no little Dutch boy around to stick his finger in it for us...

"Multi-culti fails because it is the construct of dimwits. Leftwing dimwits, mostly, who as usual completely misunderstand what people are really like. "

    Spot on!

"Roll that one round your tongue for just a little longer. They've become violent in the process of becoming like us."

That's some powerful cognitive dissonance, isn't it?

"Multiculturalism: The process by which a government takes a mixed population slowly coming to terms with their differences and makes damn sure that doesn't happen."

    Heh!

"Multiculturalism and immigration are not really the same thing..."

It's pretty hard to have one without the other...

"...who told me that her community was now concentrated in a particular area while that district was for the Caribbeans, that one for the Somalis, the Indians lived in that place while somewhere else was for the Serbians and etc and etc."

I've noticed that in pockets of my home county too - you can often tell - when driving through - by the type of shops...

  8. 'It's pretty hard to have one without the other...'

Not quite... multiculturalism is a deliberate attempt to integrate (or, in many cases, marginalise!) different cultures in the same place.

Immigration is just the desire to allow people freedom of movement, regardless of whether or not they bother integrating.

One may lead to the other - difficult to have multiculturalism without immigration - but one does not make the other discredited.

If they don’t do so, what are they there for?

Many politicians, are elected by popular vote but prefer to think of themselves as their electorate's guardians rather than their representatives.

No doubt media commentators feel similarly empowered...
