A Perfect Microcosm...

...of everything that's wrong with our society. That was yesterday's 'disturbance'.

First, the utter self-centeredness and ignorance of the modern student:
Many students condemned the troublemakers but some said violence was an acceptable form of protest.
One student from King’s College said that 450 Cambridge students had attended the protest and she believed some from her college were on the roof.
‘It was students from King’s who made the effigies of Cameron and Clegg. It’s been fantastic. The atmosphere is amazing and everybody is really nice.
‘The majority is a completely non-violent protest. I’m not really worried about violence against property or objects, smashing buildings is completely fine, it’s a great image of our anger. I’ve got no problem with that at all as long as nobody gets hurt.
Everyone round to her place to trash it and steal her belongings! It's OK, it'll be 'amazing'...

Then there's the equally appalling ignorance of the modern meejah representative:
Hilarious that Kay Burley on Sky News keeps saying Millbank Tower is the headquarters of the Conservative Party. She's just as deluded as the protesters. The Tories moved out of the main tower after the general election. Their offices are next door at 30 Millbank, next to the Pizza Express.

Clearly not many of these protesters are geography students...

UPDATE: Kay Burley on Sky is not having a good afternoon. She has just said that protesters are on the roof of Millbank Tower. They are not. They are on the top of 30 Millbank. She's also saying that Mi5, "across the river" has shut its entrance. Er, that would be Mi5 next door to 30 Millbank. Mi6 is across the river, not Mi5. Dear oh dear.
Clearly, some of these students should set their sights on being TV news totty. Obviously, no education is required...

And finally, the bored ennui and indifference to their job of our professional public servant:
The politically active, socially concerned and highly educated metropolitan middle class, especially those with political, media, and academic connections, now have the police force they wanted.
Which is nice for them, I'm sure. But what about those of us who'd like to arrive at our unburnt-to-the-ground places of work in order to keep funding your salaries and pensions, hmm?

  1. Just tot up the cost of the damage and policing and add it to next year's tuition fees. Pour encourager les autres.

  2. Nice bit of nostalgia yesterday, police caught off guard, anyone spot any non-student entryists (probably MI5)?

Students round my way have been politically docile for about two decades and in the past they usually protested on someone elses behalf even if, in reaqlity, they were just having a laugh.

  3. I simply wonder what it will be like when those of us who are fed up with the state and its leeches decide to act.

  4. If the students are going to try and be like the French then we need the French equivalent of the CRS who seem to enjoy mixing it with them.

Your taxes probably paid for half of it anyway.

If that is the case can we claim that doing so is lawful property reclamation?

  8. @Blue Eyes

Quoting Gadget: "We tried it our way at G20 and were ‘wrong’. New strategies of ‘engagement’ were implemented."

Their way was.. oh... killing random newspaper vendors? That works how?

    A splendid idea!

Welcome to the 'Me! Me! Me!' age....

"I simply wonder what it will be like when those of us who are fed up with the state and its leeches decide to act."

Not likely to happen. We're too busy working to pay for it all....

"...the Daily Mash has more accurate coverage..."

    Perfect! :D

We need something. We cannot allow a bunch of over-privileged students and troublemakers to run riot.

"Your taxes probably paid for half of it anyway."

    *sob*

    Clarissa has the right idea!

"Did you miss Gadget's point entirely?"

    No, I don't think I did.

Gadget sees that 'the enemy' is getting a taste of its own medicine. He forgets that there's a hell of a lot of people out there that are manifestly NOT the 'enemy' and who just want to get on with their lives.

Unmolested by the rioters OR the police.

Frankly, Gadget should wake up and smell the coffee....

"Their way was.. oh... killing random newspaper vendors?"

Yes, very brave, wasn't it? Refuse to do anything about screaming students assaulting them with stones and fire extinguishers, because they are afraid of the public reaction to....them pushing over an elderly man walking away from them...

    Utter madness.
