I’ve Seen Better Legacies, Frankly…

Dotun Adebayo (BBC radio presenter and columnist for the Voice newspaper) on the strange death of reggae ‘star’ Smiley Culture and his lasting legacy:
I'd go as far as to say that through his musical slapstick, Smiley made it OK for guys like me to chat cockney without being regarded as "coconuts", and for white guys to speak "yardie" without being regarded as wiggers – or, worse, Jim Davidson.
Oh, my. A truly towering monument to a life, that is…

Of course, in the comments, the usual suspects are straining at the leash:
Michael Rosen: …am so sad he is gone and I am very keen to know exactly how yet another man of African heritage has died while being with police or in their custody.
Clearly because the police murdered him, eh, Michael? I mean, what other possible explanation could there be?

If it turns out that first reports are correct and he did indeed stab himself, I've no doubt you'll cheerfully turn round and whine that the police should have anticipated this and slapped him in handcuffs.

    Let's not forget the word 'producer' was introduced into everyday language replacing 'Horty' for the HO/RT 1 inconvenience form that used to be issued to produce one's docs at a local police station within 7 days of request until even that became too difficult admin-wise.

    It must have been a LAAAAARRRGGGEEE amount of drugs for old 'Smiley' to off himself like that given the bizarre nature of the Uk Criminal Justice System these days.

    Of course, lefties who read Da Graun know that in many 'socialist' countries, the police have never ever done anything to any suspect so naturally the CiF-ers are outraged when they think that such a thing has happened in the capitalist UK.

    I'm sure Mickey Rosen, Trotskyist and ex Childrens Laureate, will produce a poem marking your passage in a "gangsta stylee" for "da yooff" innit.
