I Think We Can Do Without His ‘Contribution To Society’….

A jealous man who kidnapped his ex-partner off the street and subjected her to a late-night terror ordeal has been jailed for four years.
So, what, less than half that served, I reckon?
Burnley Crown Court heard how Zaid Ahmed, 40, had attacked Kimberley Catlow with a steering lock, made repeated and chilling threats to kill her, and claimed he had killed a former girlfriend.

He ended up barricading the pair of them into his flat and Miss Catlow only escaped after a ‘three-and-half-hour nightmare’ when police arrived.

Ahmed was to claim to police he and Miss Catlow were married under Islamic law.
Riiiiiiight
Simon Gurney, for Ahmed, said: “Aside from this incident, he has contributed to society. He has always been in employment.
How nice. I notice he doesn’t say as what, though…
Sentencing, Judge Andrew Woolman said the defendant recognised he had anger and stress-management problems.
No, he doesn’t. He has ‘shouldn’t be at large in society’ problems.

Was it necessary to even mention Shariaa, Miss CPS? Only The Law ie British law is pertinent to the case unless the girl married him in an Islamic country. There was really no need to imply equal weight to 'Islamic law'.

I'm guessing a double First at Oxbridge....Law and Icenci Feminist Basket weaving ?

  4. Any self-respecting Iceni female would have castrated the evil piece of shit before removing his head - probably with a very blunt axe. Therefore, please do not degrade heroic Celtic warrior women who kicked serious Roman arse while fighting for their freedom against a hostile invading force by associating them with modern day femiloons who themselves are a hostile invading force against common sense.

  6. I presume the lady in question is not asian or muslim. I presume, as the man claimed some shit by the name of 'Islamic law' that he is at least one of those two if not both.

But why oh why do non-muslim girls go with muslim men? What do they expect from them? The latest burqa fashion? The prospect of being the mother to twelve brats who will, allah be praised, receive scads of state funding?

As usual, a muslim 'man' beats up a woman because, as his defence suggested, it is his supposed right to use 'his' woman as he pleases. This is what non-muslim girls get, so my sympathy declines when I see what they have started.

Psychotic 'rape' victims with a Karadžićian taste for genocide, you mean?

  8. Was it necessary to even mention Shariaa, Miss CPS?

I think it was because the defence started it as an explanation of Zaid Ahmed's attitude and there was a danger of somebody thinking it was relevant, so the CPS had to state it was objectively untrue as well as being of no significance.

Jojo Hari is in bad odour but he made one good comment in a piece he largely ripped from Der Spiegel: that you can't have multiculturalism and western equality before the law in the same space. You have to choose one or the other.

    http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/commentators/johann-hari/johann-hari-how-multiculturalism-is-betraying-women-446806.html

Apparently the German courts have been causing consternation by recognizing that two systems of law are in operation in the same space so yes, if you marry in to an ethnic minority you could find you've removed yourself from normal German/European law.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry. The Verfassungsgericht (German Constitutional Court) celebrated 60 glorious years yesterday... and they are famous for such rulings. There is a whole culture of 'batshit insane' judgements from German Courts.

Rape was only part of it. The Iceni uprising (along with other tribes) came about when their kindom was annexed (stolen) by the Romans following the death of King Prasutagus, Boudica's husband.

I don't know about you but if some foreign invader unilaterally tore up their treaty of tribal independence, stole my lands, murdered my people and raped my kids I'd be fucking ticked off too.

  12. "but if some foreign invader unilaterally tore up their treaty of tribal independence, stole my lands, "

Uhm they (the Romans) didn't. Not according to what history there is. Infact the Romans acted within the law and the norms of their times. Boudica nor her daughters had any claim to the 'throne' and her hubby, had sold his tribe's independence long back.

King-Hubby should have read the small print.

Romano-British history according to Suetonius Paulinus?

The Iceni were allowed self government providing they got along with the Romans. It's a sweet deal that many tribes accepted along with generous bribes. Prasutagus left half of his kingdom to the Roman Emperor (Nero) in the hope his wife and tribe would be allowed to continue living in peace. However, this was interpreted as grab everything so the Romans annexed Iceni lands. And Suetonius (govenor of Britain), being a confrontational dickhead, did just that. So while he was off destroying the druids on Mona (having seriously humiliated the Iceni) the south-eastern tribes decided, in an act that would now be defined as overkill, decided to sack the Roman towns and cities, killing indiscriminately and razing stuff to the ground, in revenge. But then, that's how shit went down in those far off days of yore. We can't judge them by modern standards.

Suetonius caused so much unrest with the British tribes Nero had him replaced and things settled down under the new governor who wasn't such a dickhead. The new governor did what Romans do best: civilising people and introducing them to a more modern culture. He managed to do it without beating tribal queens with a rod and raping royal children and creating a massive uprising. He simply went back to bribing tribal leaders which made everyone happy.

If Suetonius hadn't been so venal and brutally stupid it is unlikely the entire south east of Britain would have gone up in flames. And no one would have heard of Boudica.

  17. @ Lynne, try The Annals by Tacitus, Book XIV. He's fairly clear....'by this token' and all that. Prasutagus must have known that he couldn't stitch up the emperor by 'illegally' (according to Roman Law) leaving his lands to Queen B and the Girls....and that his tribe would however inherit his massive debts.

The Romans reacted with praiseworthy restraint-by the standards of the time. B went way over the top even by the same standards and would have made a Einstazgruppe blush.

History, as written by the victors perhaps? I'm sure the Roman praisworthy restraint over the destruction of Mona was favourably written up as well. Maybe because the Druids refused to succumb to becoming fatally indebted to the invaders, had too much influence over the tribes and so became an intolerable pain in the bum?

There's a suggestion that Seneca might have stirred it up by forcing debt on the Britons and then considering the giving of half the Iceni kingdom to the emperor as a gross insult so all of it was grabbed. But, since that is all speculation for which there is no solid evidence, who knows?

In fact, if you compare Roman tactics of conquering Celtic Britain through indebtedness to what is happening with the EU and most especially the PIIGS today, the tactics haven't changed a bit...

    :D

I was thinking the exact same thing.

  20. "History, as written by the victors perhaps?"

To be sure, yet old Tatty is pretty evenhanded about the Roman atrocities on this occasion-going out of his way to also explain the Iceni's justification for their 'war crimes' (to put it in 'modern').

There isn't really much doubt that B. wasn't the brave, plucky romanticized-by-the-Victorians Freedom Fighter of legend but something more akin to a serbian warlord. I seem to recall they recently found direct physical evidence for one of her nastier Crimes Against Humanity [the temple bar-b-que]?

Yeah, the lady sure knew how to hold a grudge.

But then (sorry to harp on about this) the Mona (Menai) Massacre was equally as brutal. And had the legions not been busy destroying an entire religious culture in Wales, they would have been available to quell the uprising and prevent Boudica going crispy critter on Roman subjects.

It seems that Suetonius was so confident he had the Iceni where he wanted them, he left his home bases grossly under-garrisoned while he went off to kick druid butt. A big mistake that cost thousands of lives on both sides.

You know, it's ages since I had an intelligent exchange like this. Apologies to Julia for taking up space on her comments. :0)

No doubt (I haven't read the sources for that for a long time) but to be fair to the Romans the Druids weren't the middle class bedsheet wearing Stone Henge littering tree huggers of our age. They were the hook handed bearded religious fanatics of their time and would have been more likely to have been leaving IEDs in the hedgerows of Buckinghamshire than prancing around greeting the Midsummer at Glastonbury.

Lot of parallels to current conflicts.

Since there are no written histories of the druids we really have no idea what their ideology was. We can only speculate and extrapolate from meagre evidence (e.g. Lindow Man and Tolund Man). That the tribes tolerated them is cicumstantial evidence they were held in awe or fear or both.

Agreed, that old time religion certainly isn't the tree-hugging, stone-kissing, sun worhsipping, dancing and prancing abomination that passes for druidism today. I mean, could you imagine Beardy Williams besting a fully armed centurion? Me neither. Although it is possible he could have bored one into a coma...

Lucan & Strabo give us some idea as do the various archeologicals. Even allowing for propaganda it would seem the Druids managed to shock fairly unshockable Romans with their savagery...which was not an easy thing to do. Let's not forget that the Romans only ever banned two cults-out of all the thousands they encountered...druidism and Xianity.

    Taliesin? Taliban more like.

    LOL

Yet Emperor Theodosius, and subsequently the Roman Empire, finally embraced Xianity following the massacre of Thessalonica.

I really must dash. Thanks for engaging in an old interest of mine.
