Jailing him on Thursday for five-and-a-half years, Judge Jane Miller QC also gave the burglar a concurrent sentence for going equipped and a further one year each, again concurrently, for the two fraud offences.
She said Berkowitz was a "career burglar" who had offered very little mitigation. "The only remorse you feel is to be sorry for yourself because you were caught," she said.Yet, given the 'punishment' for his 250 convictions is a laughable 40 years worth of jail time that he certainly hasn't served (because we know it's just for show, no-one ever actually serves what they are sentenced to in this country), why should he have a reason to 'feel sorry for himself'?
He's clearly coming out ahead of the deal, isn't he?
As Schrodinger's Dog commented on this post:
"Hate crimes" attract massively enhanced penalties because they purportedly spread fear among the wider community. And doesn't burglary do just that? It isn't just a matter of getting a police incident number, filing an insurance claim and replacing whatever was stolen. A person has had their home violated, while what has been taken may not be replaceable. Is that what it'd take for this to be treated seriously?

Burglary is far more serious than the authorities pretend. My wife - a strong person - was unable to sleep in each of our UK homes after they were burgled and we had to move. The sense of violation is real. In Poland however, we were burgled, but didn't have to move. We got wise, employed armed guards and were never troubled again. Unlike the British police, they could be relied upon to be 100% on the property-owner's side.
ReplyDeleteOf course the idiotic concept of "hate crime" doesn't need extending. Who gives a damn WHY some scum did something wicked? The only important question is what will it take to make him (and others looking on) decide not to do it again. Whatever that might take, the current sentencing policy in Britain is not it.
My libertarian slogan is "One-tenth of the laws enforced with ten times more vigour"
I'm glad Schrodinger's dog is still around. Some ratbag stole his cat! And now we really do not know whether it is alive or dead!
ReplyDelete5 1/2 years, say he does half that for 30k income, 30k for two and a half years of prison. A person in a normal job would earn more, a person on benefits would have a better income. Teach these bastards basic maths, actually why bother, just give the scrote the choice hangman's noose or no benefit, no free housing no support when you get out of prison. You have done nothing to garner support of your fellow man, if anything the complete opposite. So sod you, hang or starve or get a job and contribute something for the first time in your miserable parasitic existence.
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Bunny
I just can't understand why these judges/magistrates consider an additional concurrent sentence punishment.
ReplyDeleteThey really do not live on planet earth.
"Listen son you are grounded for a month for beating up your sister. You are grounded for another month for playing truant. Also grounded for an additional month for lying about it afterwards."
"So Dad I'm grounded for three months then?"
"Why no son that's only one month."
Even kids can work out that if they are going to be naughty you might as well go for multiple sins rather than just the one as the punishment is the same.
And I suspect most parents let them off their punsihment after a couple of weeks just like the judicial system.

ReplyDeleteThe Germannen/Wikings called it "Wolfsheading". ALL benefits were removed. They were not allowed into settelments, they were not allowed weapons of any sort, not allowed to have money on their person, not allowed into any building. Anyone found feeding, clothing, or sheltering them recieved the same sentence, or the death sentence. EVERY person could kill the scum with impunity, without fear of punishment. In fact it was seen as a "community service" to do so.
THAT would teach the bastards.
Oh, and that should go for the criminal as well as the judges.
ReplyDeleteI like what you say, Furor Teutonicus! Can we have some of that please?
ReplyDelete"My libertarian slogan is "One-tenth of the laws enforced with ten times more vigour""
ReplyDeleteI'd fully support that. I'd just add 'For the criminals, five times the consequences'
"...or get a job and contribute something for the first time in your miserable parasitic existence."
Like that's going to happen!
"Even kids can work out that if they are going to be naughty you might as well go for multiple sins rather than just the one as the punishment is the same. "
Indeed! 'May as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb'
"Oh, and that should go for the criminal as well as the judges."
:D
