They Sound Like A Typical Hull Couple…

For eight months, Yvonne Dearing was abusive and rude to her neighbours when drunk.
She would call the emergency services and send fire engines to their homes on false alarms.
While Dearing was causing havoc, her partner Graham, 56, went on an arson spree around the city centre, blaming it on the stress of being married to her, although they had tied the knot four weeks earlier.
At least they are each saving two other people from Hull – err, hell…

  2. I know it gets a terrible name, but I visited Hull for the first time last year and found it quite pleasant. The city centre had some fine old buildings, some nice real ale pubs and the people were very friendly.

A friend who knows it well told me civilisation heads for the hills after the shops close though.

  3. Typical? Really Julia? My family and extended family are from Hull and ALL are in fulltime employment with such professions as photographers, doctors practice managers, building project manager, solicitor, university administrator, self-employed and so on. Virtually all have their own homes except for the younger members who are just starting out and are renting until they can save enough to buy. None are on benefits. Typical Hull couple indeed! ... Bah!

  4. Ex-Hull Uni I am, back in the early-mid seventies.

    No 'umber bridge then, like.

Back of beyond. On the road to nowhere. Like going back to the early 60s. A distinctive accent, distinctive and good beer. A bacon fadge at 4.00am. Those were the days.

I particularly remember boozy dockers chasing us round the football pitch trying to kick 4 kinds of sh*t out of us. Fortunately we were young and fit.

Men-only snugs, its own telephone company, a world apart. Great years in a special place. Actually, I lived in Cottingham (the posh part).

The librarian (who you'd spot hiding behind columns in the library and observing people) was the guy whose parents fuck*d him up.

True, it was easy to get beaten up on a Friday night, but as always you just stopped going to such places and took the train to Nellie's in Beverly.

  5. Wow..a bit of deja vu there from the previous poster! At Hull Uni myself(mid to late 70's)Lived in Cottingham too;pleasant litle suburb.Arnott's fadges were gigantic barm cake sandwiches, sold from the back of a shop in the small hours.Nellies in Beverly was a pub run by two incredibly ancient ladies, who sold beer from a table.
Spring Bank area was best avoided after dark, but the town wasn't too bad in those days.

To be fair to Hull, that's not totally unlike any other large town now, is it?

No argument there. As I say, my own impressions were good. Any large town has its share of deadbeats and low-life.
