There were angry scenes in court as Steven Pickering, 32, escaped a jail term for launching an attack on tiny Logan that 'could have killed him'.
Now, Logan’s mum Sinead Nield, 22, has told how Pickering robbed her of a year of her baby’s life as he was taken into care as police investigated who was responsible for Logan’s injuries because Pickering would not admit what he had done. And just how did he come to escape a spell behind bars?
Judge Jonathan Rose, sitting at Bradford Crown Court, imposed a 12-month sentence suspended for two years, saying the only thing that kept Pickering out of jail was his low intelligence.Hmmmm….
Was this information a shock to the mother, then?
Denise Breen-Lawton, prosecuting, told the court Pickering, who had a daughter by a previous relationship, did not work and was described as 'lazy' at home, doing little to look after Logan.
Sinead was taking a hairdressing course at Huddersfield Technical College and on January 16 left Pickering to look after Logan on his own.
Miss Breen-Lawton told how at lunchtime Pickering phoned 999 and paramedics arrived. Pickering said Logan was 'floppy' and 'breathing funny' but insisted nothing had happened.
At first medics suspected meningitis but investigations subsequently found that Logan had suffered a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain. A doctor later said Logan had been subjected to 'significant forces'. It was likely the baby had been 'held, shaken and thrown down.'
Pickering denied hurting his son but admitted to being 'a bit heavy-handed or rough' but no-one had shown him how to handle a baby. What, not even the mother? The one now whinging to the media?
A ‘findings of fact’ hearing in June 2010 decided that Pickering had caused the injuries. Gillian Batts, for Pickering, presented a psychological report which described Pickering as 'less intellectually able than 99 percent of his peers.'
Miss Batts said: 'The defendant’s limited capabilities meant he was not able to deal with Logan when he had one of his more difficult periods. He sounds like the sort of person who shouldn’t be left in charge of a goldfish! So why was he left in charge of a baby?
'Logan suffered with colic and I am sure those with children understand how difficult colic is.
'The defendant should really never have been left alone with the child.
'The defendant had a momentary loss of temper and caused the injuries.'For once, I’m inclined to agree with the defence. Why is the mother seemingly free of any criticism here?
After the case, Sinead said: 'He almost killed his own son and should have been locked up.
'I feel disappointed and let down by the system that it has taken since 2010 for this to come to court. But even now Steven hasn’t said how the injuries were caused.'You feel disappointed and let down by ‘the system’?
Did ‘the system’ fix you up with a man with such a low IQ if you stood him next to a pot plant you’d be hard put to tell the difference?
Did ‘the system’ ensure that you fell pregnant to him?
Did ‘the system’ force you to leave the child with him to take on the vital task of learning to be a hairdresser?
'Had Steven confessed at the very beginning my baby would have been returned to me.' But Logan was placed with foster parents and Sinead had a daily 30-mile round trip to see him.
She said: 'Leaving my baby was the hardest thing and our bond was destroyed. 'It was obvious he saw his foster mum and dad as his real parents and I was devastated. I missed so many of his milestones and I can never get that back. 'I pity the child, and the foster parents, and I can’t help feeling that this kid’s chances would improve immeasurably if indeed it had remained with them…
I mean, we’re talking her about someone who claims not to have noticed her beau was about as bright as the average battery hen,and far less useful...
'I was 10 years younger than Steven and never suspected he had learning difficulties, yes I knew he had problems with reading and writing but never in a million years would I have suspected he had such a low IQ.'Which makes me wonder about yours.
Meanwhile, down south, yet more potential MENSA candidates are breeding, though to give them credit, they are attempting to reduce population numbers almost as quickly as they are adding to them….
A teenager stabbed his girlfriend to death 29 times as she screamed for mercy on a 999 call, the Old Bailey heard today.
Myles Williams also tried to kill her brother and attacked her sister while on bail for a previous assault, the jury was told. And what was the attraction for the unfortunate deceased? Was Williams a prime hunk of manhood?
Williams is only 19 but he has four children by three different women including his murder victim Kirsty Treloar, the court heard.Ah. Well, maybe he made up for it by a quiet, unassuming manner?
He was both violent and controlling towards her but on New Year’s Day this year had tried to make up with her by texting “I aint going to hit u again and I won’t hit u 4 this year next yr the yr after that ..... love you 4 eva.“ (corr).
But, said prosecutor Crispin Aylett QC: “At its highest this can only be described as a conditional New Year’s resolution and it lasted only until the following morning.”Guess not, then...
He’d also clearly been around the block with the justice system before, too:
Williams was arrested but replied no comment to every question asked by detectives.Lovely!
And reading these two cases one after the other, (and noting there’s no shortage of them) it strikes me just how much time is taken up by the State and its agents (NHS, police, social services) in resolving the issues caused by inadequate women choosing inadequate men and then breeding freely with them, while relying on the state to pick up the pieces, sometimes literally...
And how public condemnation is always targeted at the man, while the woman seems to be free from any attempt to ask pertinent questions such as ‘Tell me, just what did you expect to happen?’
Indeed, the woman is free to get the press onside and proclaim herself the victim in the case, rather than one of the contributing factors.
I mean, in the interest of ‘equality’, should those questions not be just as valid?
Here we go again - mothers still in their teens whose lack of experience is matched by their paucity of judgement.
ReplyDeleteI seem top remember that accepted wisdom in the dog-breeding world says that accidental mongrels are highly-sexed because they inherit the same genes that enabled their parents to evade supervision.
If this extrapolates to humans, it might go some way to explain the headlong dash into parenthood - deliberate or accidental - that has, in some circles, condensed a generation down to well under 20 years.
I agree. Was I the only one sickened by the pictures of Tia Sharps mother and grandmother sharing a hearse at her funeral last week? Wonder what they were talking about? How good a shag the killer was?
ReplyDeleteJaded
Women who make bad choices in men should not be immune to criticism.
ReplyDelete',,, a teenager stabbed his girlfriend to death 29 times...'
ReplyDeleteNo he didn't. He only killed her once.
Nig nog BTW.
TNB.

ReplyDeleteWhilst agreeing with all your other points, be fair. "Hairdressing" is not exactly the number one job choice, but at least she is not sitting around watching Kyle, and being a proffessional "Don't want a job" dole scrounger.
This is one of those really sad and of course anger generating cases - just imagine for a moment there had been a, we shall call them, child welfare officer, who had recognised the fathers complete inability to handle much at all as regards his own welfare, never mind be left responsible for a small child, and duly told the mother that unless she made other arrangements to have someone else recognised as responsible and capable looking after her child whilst she was absent from home then they would consider taking the child into temporary care until she did. Cue outraged "Social services have stolen my child and are conspiring to stop me bettering myself stories".
ReplyDeleteSinead = trouble with police
ReplyDeleteLogan = trouble with police
Then we run into Myles, who'd at least not been tarred with that brush, but ended up in the hands of a Crispin. I don't know why the CPS bothered with a QC for this, Steven Pickering could probably have carried out a professional prosecution himself.
It's obvious that Sinead Nield and Kirsty Treloar did not value their reproductive organs very highly. The apparatus to support their miscegenated offspring is paid for largely by those who resent paying it - and are powerless to stop doing so.
I am not British (although I have 100% English blood), so in order to obtain my right to abode I had to undertake a test. It was politically biased, but never mind. I had to exhibit a willingness and ability to assimilate information.
It was not hard - especially for me, but if you did not study, you would assuredly fail. Most of the people reading this would fail without study.
Perhaps a small quiz before being allowed to vote would help.
* What is the square root of 9?
* Who wrote the Canterbury Tales?
* What is Pythagoras' Theorem?
* In what year was the Battle of the Somme?
* In 4,000 words, describe David Cameron's term as PM without repeating any words apart from articles, conjunctions, prepositions and 'spineless'
* You are about to play chess. Is it better to be black or white?{a}
{a} Chess fans will know the answer to this, as will non-chess fans
Huddersfield has no more a share of quality genes than Croydon, JuliaM.
ReplyDeleteOnly this week, my Samsung attracted the attention of a local mechanic whilst he was servicing my car. "What yer watchin' mate?" I told him it was Fokine choreography to which he replied "I like Fokine porn".
Macheath has also written a thoughtful and important post on this subject.

In between WWI & WWII when euthenasia for inadequates was all the rage in north America and Scandinavia (plus also Nazi Germany) the British Parliament was almost unique in debating and deciding against it, I sometimes wonder if they were wrong.
ReplyDelete"If this extrapolates to humans, it might go some way to explain the headlong dash into parenthood - deliberate or accidental - that has, in some circles, condensed a generation down to well under 20 years."
ReplyDeleteIt's an interesting concept, but I suspect peer pressure and repeating what you see all around you is the main driver...
"Was I the only one sickened by the pictures of Tia Sharps mother and grandmother sharing a hearse at her funeral last week?"
Nope.
And who paid for such a lavish funeral, and with what? I thought the area lived in 'poverty'?
"No he didn't. He only killed her once."
I've grown so used to appalling sentence construction in the media I hadn't even noticed that one!
"...but at least she is not sitting around watching Kyle, and being a proffessional "Don't want a job" dole scrounger."
Possibly. Or this might have been an ultimatum issued by the DWP.
"Cue outraged "Social services have stolen my child and are conspiring to stop me bettering myself stories"."
ReplyDeleteOh, almost certainly.
"The apparatus to support their miscegenated offspring is paid for largely by those who resent paying it - and are powerless to stop doing so."
Indeed!
"... to which he replied "I like Fokine porn"."
:D
"Macheath has also written a thoughtful and important post on this subject."
Yes indeed!
XX Possibly. Or this might have been an ultimatum issued by the DWP. XX
ReplyDeleteAye. Possi.... no probably.
Plus, dead easy to "work from home" without having to worry the tax man, or the dole investigators too.
It is disgusting for people to comment on a little bit of the story that was published!! I know both Sinead and Steven yes he was so wrong In what he did and dont condone the fact of that but what makes eveyone here think they have the right to judge!! So infuriating
ReplyDeleteI'll tell you why. That Steven Pickering is not only a child abuser. He's also a rapist and a nonce!
DeleteHe threatened to rape my younger sister after beating her best mate at the time. Stamping on her head then raping her because she broke up with him. Pickering is scum!
I ALSO KNOW SINEAD AND DID KNOW STEVE, THEY BOTH WENT TO A PARENTING CLASS BEFORE LOGAN WAS BORN AND SHOWN HOW TO HOLD A BABY AND ALL THE OTHER JOBS THAT COME WITH LOOKING AFTER A CHILD . A COUPLE OF WEEKS BEFORE THE INCIDENT I SAW STEVE HOLDING LOGAN WITH NO PROBLEMS. OK SHE SHOULD HAVE USED BIRTH CONROL,BUT STEVE WAS NOT AS SLOW AS JUDGE ROSE MADE OUT, BUT HE WAS LAZY AND THOUGHT HE COULD GET THROUGH LIFE BY LETTING PEOPLE DO EVERTHING FOR HIM [HIS OWN WORDS].MAYBE NOT THAT STUPID AFTER ALL. TO THE PERSON THAT PUT SINEAD AND LOGAN EQUAL POLICE HOW WRONG YOU ARE.
