Modern Grandparenting...

"The lives of these defendants have been blighted as a result of the fact that they haven't been able to see their grandchildren," said Mr Lidster.
"They would very much like to have access to them and to have had a relationship with the whole family.
"They realise a lot of bridges would have to be built before any reconciliation.
"What made him snap, he doesn't know. It was a controlled snap. He is horrified and devastated at the result of his actions, from the effect it has had on everyone, particularly the children.
"He bitterly regrets his actions. His remorse is genuine."
What did he do? Cut them off the Christmas card list? Fail to buy them sweeties?

No, no. This is 2012. And it's Grimsby:
Dennis Bloomfield, 53, of Newhaven Terrace, Grimsby, admitted assaulting Graham Blakey, damaging a car belonging to his stepdaughter Shirlianne Kershaw, and having a lump hammer as an offensive weapon on March 26.
His wife, Wendy Bloomfield, 52, admitted assaulting her daughter, Miss Kershaw, and having a pickaxe handle as an offensive weapon.
*sigh*

Wll with a pickaxe and a lump hammer they've got the tools to build as many bridges as you like.

  2. So this couple, having recently abandoned their 5-year legal battle, drive for twenty minutes down the coast and 'by chance' run into their estranged daughter and her family setting out for a walk. Oh, and they just happen to have a lump hammer and a pickaxe handle in the car too.

I'm somehow reminded of Jane Austen's elegant oxymoron:
'Miss Lucas perceived him from an upper window as he walked towards the house, and instantly set out to meet him accidentally in the lane.'

(Although the hammer and pickaxe handle may, much like the knuckleduster from this story, simply have been kept in the car in case of need; perhaps in some circles it's as usual as keeping a spare wheel or an umbrella in the boot.)

  3. Oooh - some personal interest:

“THIS ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTS ME!!!! I AM A VERY CLOSE FRIEND OF MISS KERSHAW AND THIS ARTICLE IMPLYS ASIF SHES A BAD PERSON STOPPING THEM SEE THEIR GRANDCHILDREN.... IF BLOODY REPORTERS GOT THEIR STORYS STRAIGHT THEY WENT TO COURT AND LOST THE FIGHT TO SEE THEM THE COURT TOLD THEM TO STAY AWAY FROM THE GRANDCHILDREN ON CAFCASS RECOMMENDATION SO WHAT ALOOWED A **** TO GET SYMPATHY..... ALSO DIDNT KNOW SHE WAS PREGNANT. MY FRIEND IS OF VERY SLENDER BUILD AND COULD TELL WITHOUT A DOUBT THAT SHE WAS PREGNANT.

AND NO MENTION OF WHAT IT DID TO MY FRIEND WHO WAS SO TERRIFIED SHE HAD TO MOVE FROM HER SETTLED HOUSE AT 7 MONTHS PREGNANT AND TAKE HER CHILDREN OUT OF SCHOOL AWAY FROM FRIENDS FROM FEAR OF MORE VIOLENCE AGAINST THEM AS IRONICALLY MRS BLLOMFIELD MOVED HERSELF ONTO THE SAME STREET WHERE HER 2 CHILDREN LIVED. ALSO DIDNT SAY THAT MISS KERSHAWS SISTER LIVES ON THE SAME STREET AND HAS THREE CHILDREN OF HER OWN WHOM WENDY AND DENNIS BLOOMFIELD DO NOT SEE..... BUT THEY ARE NOT ENTANGLED IN LEGAL BATTLES TO SEE THOSE GRANDCHILDREN SHOULD THEY BE WORRIED ABOUT SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAPPENING TO THEM WHEN THEY MEET IN THE STREET WITH THE BASEBALL BAT AND PICKAXE THEY SO HAPPEN TO HAVE WITH THEM IN THEIR CAR..... IDIOTS!!!! GRANDPARENTS DONT DO **** LIKE THAT INFRONT OF THEIR GRANDCHILDREN!!!! GOSH I AM SOO MAD HOW THIS PORTRAYS MY FRIEND!!!”

I'm at a bit of a loss to decipher it but something's upset them.

  5. Just remember this case when their is a call for grandparents to have a legal right to see their children!!

The law might not be perfect, but in a civilised country we have to accept it. The grandparents have just proved that the court made the right decision in stopping them from having contact previously.

Feel sorry for those on the end of their violence and the children who suffered indirectly.

I understand the friend's frustration and her rant in the comments section. The paper should have chosen to report on a victim impact statement as opposed to the predictable mitigation in defence.

    Heh!

"I'm somehow reminded of Jane Austen's elegant oxymoron:

    Well, quite!

"I'm at a bit of a loss to decipher it but something's upset them."

It was the sticking caps lock that gave it away, wasn't it? ;)

I do like the qualification that 'grandparents should do stuff like that in front of the grandchildren'...

    Underclass etiquette!

    "Ähh?, is that not illegal???"

    :D
