Oh, I don't know... given the abundance of burger vans and mobile fast food outlets in the area, perhaps it pays to advertise the immovable nature of one's business.
Business with badly spelt sign, is probably a sign that the signwriter has piss poor English. Not that would make that signwriter 'foreign' of course, it could have been anybody who has been the victim of our socialist education system.
As a graphic designer/signmaker myself I am ashamed to admit that 'stationary/stationery' is one of my common mistakes. However, at our company we check each other's work. A very simple and elegant solution, as is my colleague's mnemonic - 'stationEry such as Envelopes'. No, the problem with much of what we would consider to be embarrassing mistakes in typography these days is not just down to the lamentable quality of English teaching in the country, it's the fact that English is the second language for a lot of people doing artwork, particularly for take-aways and other commonly 'non-native' owned businesses. We often enjoy a few rounds of 'spot the mistakes' when customers present us with files which they didn't want to pay us to originate but were happy for us to print, all the while thinking they were saving money because their brother's friend is 'good with computers'. They may have a copy if Illustator, but they are somewhat lacking in clue unfortunately.

ReplyDeleteThe owner used to have a van selling those things. The business did well, and now has a shop - which doesn't move unlike their old van. Maybe?
ReplyDeleteWell assuming the foundations are solid it's not entirely wrong.
ReplyDeleteSurely the proprietor failed to pay for the extra cost check your spelling option at the sign writer.

"Surely the proprietor failed to pay for the extra cost check your spelling option at the sign writer."
Spellcheck wouldn't have caught it though.

Good point! I once pointed out a similarly misspelled official sign in Tesco, to be greeted by blank incomprehension.
