...but put that glass of wine down!
The Kingston refuge for women from South Asian backgrounds is one of only three in London.
Here women are made to feel more comfortable by recognising their different cultural needs.
Mrs Dearlove explained: “For example in one refuge, a service user might like to drink a glass of wine but in the South Asian one we would not have that there as there may be somebody from a Muslim background.”
Congratz! You've escaped the control of your violent boyfriend for ... the control of the PC Brigade!
Julia, how do you think you'd get on if (hypothetically!) you turned up at a non-"South Asian" refuge and announced that because you have a cultural problem with booze nobody else should be allowed so much as a sip of wine? Why do I get the feeling there's more to this than we're being told?
ReplyDelete£25 would help service users to volunteer with Hestia today
ReplyDeleteFunny how free time always costs money, innit.
If the poor Moosssslimmms don't want to drink, why are the infidels declined a wee glass of Sauvignon?
ReplyDeleteIf your bastard or a 'South Asian' (aye, right) husband had been beating you up, who would begrudge you a wee drinky
Sucks a bit if you're a Filipino christian who has been beaten up by your partner, but fancy a glass of wine of an evening then doesn't it?
ReplyDeleteIndeed how many people who could be described as 'South Asian' would also be culturally OK with alcohol? Could it just be there is just one or two religions of south Asia that would have a problem with it? Hinduism and Buddhism have no prohibition on alcohol, nor does Confucianism. Shintoism actually uses alcohol in its purification rituals.
In fact its just Sikhism and our old friend the RoP that forbid alcohol. And I suspect its not because of offending Sikhs that this ban is in place...............
As you walk into this secret safe house you do not know what to expect. The hallway is lit up brightly and there are paintings on the cream walls.
ReplyDeleteI do hope no sentient beings are depicted - isn't that haram? This is typical of multi-culturalists: they actually know very little about the groups they so eagerly defer to.
I presume the Refuges are taxpayer funded - they usually are - so why should the taxpayer have to pay for different ones ? What is wrong with the existing Refuges ? Or do these South Asian people want to live separate and different lives ? Good God, they will want different food, different banking arrangements, different swimming facilities, different religous facilities, different schools, different clothing next. They really don't want to be British, do they ?
ReplyDeleteBack to school with you, Jim! Just because the Philippines are a southerly part of Asia doesn't mean Filipinos are South Asians. They can jolly well start their own culturally sensitive refuges instead of barging in where they're not wanted.
ReplyDeleteWhat is wrong with the existing Refuges ?
ReplyDeleteI think the lady is trying to be polite in that not all the victims of domestic violence are model citizens themselves. Which is NOT to suggest they deserve it but to acknowledge that Erin Pizzey was telling the truth when she said some of them engaged in sub-optimal behaviour and had complex issues.
And that is as much as I dare say. Pizzey got hammered for saying what was observably the case.
Years ago, Hestia was a brand of bra in Australia.
ReplyDelete(Un)fortunately, it also forms the acronym Holds Every Size Tit In Australia.
"I once took a woman from a South Asian background to central London and she said ‘I did not know this world existed’.”
That it's not a South Asian shithole yet full of them?
Who were these mysterious beings who built the monuments of London? Could it have been aliens, who designed and constructed all these masterpieces and left in their flying saucer?
"...how do you think you'd get on if (hypothetically!) you turned up at a non-"South Asian" refuge and announced that because you have a cultural problem with booze nobody else should be allowed so much as a sip of wine?"
ReplyDeleteI think if I belonged to a certain demographic...very well indeed!
"Funny how free time always costs money, innit."
Yes indeed! Why do they need this 'help' to cope with volunteers?
"Sucks a bit if you're a Filipino christian who has been beaten up by your partner, but fancy a glass of wine of an evening then doesn't it?"
Well, quite! But then, people who don't do as expected by the Righteous are always looked on with suspicion, as if they were somehow inauthentic.
The Sikh question is an odd one - I'm sure I've seen Sikhs drink!
"This is typical of multi-culturalists: they actually know very little about the groups they so eagerly defer to."
They know what they've been told, and they aren't going to listen to anyone telling them different, even if they actually come from those groups!
"Pizzey got hammered for saying what was observably the case."
ReplyDeleteNone so blind as those who will not see, lest it upset their worldview.
"(Un)fortunately, it also forms the acronym Holds Every Size Tit In Australia."
LOL!
"The Sikh question is an odd one - I'm sure I've seen Sikhs drink!"
ReplyDeleteI think its an observance that is often broken! But the religious teachings are quite clear, Sikhs should not touch alcohol or tobacco (literally in the case of tobacco).
