'Daily Mail' Commenters - Not Always Wrong...

"British police must be trying to do all they can to ensure they're the most hated in the world"
So sayeth commenter Orwell's Ghost about this story:
Police responded after motorists complained they were mistaking hobby riders, of which there are about 3million in Britain, for mounted police officers.
And by 'responded', of course, they don't mean 'laughed at the stupidity and illiteracy of drivers who mistake Prunella on Guzzle for a mounted police unit'...
Assistant chief constable Ron Hanson, the association’s head of mounted policing, wrote: ‘Anyone possessing these products is at risk of breaking the law, namely section 90 of the Police Act 1996.’
After the horse riders, no doubt they'll come for the cyclists...

I don't like horses,I'm not a rider and personally I can't understand this inherent equine zoophilia Brits tend to have. That said I live (survive?) in Norfuck, home of the horsey women. I can honestly say that at least twice last year the fact that the rider (often Children) was wearing a HiVis saved their lives and more importantly my insurance premiums. Driving country lanes you can often see the HiVis through the hedge 'blinding' that corner.

pisses me off how inconsiderate a lot of car drivers are. Surely everyone learnt for the test that you SLOWN DOWN FOR HORSES. Its ok to wipe the fucking lycra louts off the roads, the worst that will happen to your car is that you'll need a Respray. Spook a horse , and you might well be looking at a Write Off...and not only of your car!

  3. I doubt they'll come for the cyclists.

Running red lights doesn't do it, riding on pavements doesn't do it, generally behaving like louts doesn't do it, deliberate vandalism of other vehicles doesn't do it, why should this?

  4. Bunny,

Any cretin that cannot tell a civilian horse and rider from a police officer on a horse should have their licence removed. Clue a police horse is huge, a hunter or a pony is not as intimidating, that is why they ride bloody big horses and not little ones. As for cyclists, well I am one, if a cyclist behaves in an inconsiderate way prosecute them to the full extent of the law without having to make new ones up. The laws are there, use them, but not being able to tell a police horse from pet dobbin, Jesus wept.

  5. In what way does it matter if people mistake horse riders for police? And (perhaps) behave better?

  6. PCSOs, Highways Agency Traffic Officers, the AA.Who knows what is what any more and the rear view of a horse rider with a fluorescent jacket bearing the word 'Polite' can only confuse things further.

  7. More textual matter for the 'anals' of UK policing. And civilians will ignore to their peril, a plod warning that extreme caution must be exercised when using the word 'polite'.

Further to this topic, the only remaining UK police bloggers are those with official CC and Authority approval. 'Shijuro' aka 'Bender' and 'Bender the Robot' is therefore another example of the hi-viz, polite impersonator.

Oh, indeed! Note that the RSPCA carried on and charged the man regardless.. :/

" Surely everyone learnt for the test that you SLOWN DOWN FOR HORSES."

The standard of driving is now so bad, I'm starting to wonder how many bothered to take a test...

"I doubt they'll come for the cyclists."

But if they don't, questions should be asked! I've seen lots of them around London with these jackets,

"In what way does it matter if people mistake horse riders for police?"

Well, quite! AS Blueknight points out, the water's already been muddied by the police themselves!
