It must be all those thing, surely, if the council has nothing to do but fret over what the population puts in their mouths?
Chip shops, kebab houses and fast-food chains such as McDonald’s near schools would not be allowed to serve hot food to any customers – including adults – before 5pm in a shake-up of planning regulations put forward by Salford council. No, it's not April 1st:
Margaret Morris, the council’s assistant mayor, said: ‘Takeaways create jobs and provide a service, but these ideas are to make sure they are opening in the right places and not having a negative impact.
‘We don’t think they should be serving hot food before 5pm near schools, as children should be encouraged to eat healthily.
'Public health and helping to reduce obesity levels are a top priority, and while planners cannot control the food that is sold we would like every new premise to offer well promoted healthy alternatives so people can have an informed choice about the food they eat.
'Residents are encouraged to come forward with any comments or suggestions so they can be taken into consideration before a decision is made on the future of planning in our city.'I've got some comments and suggestions for you, Margaret...
Local residents were sceptical about whether the idea would work.Really? Not utterly outraged at the presumption of these jumped up little Hitlers?
Nursery nurse Rebecca Hanlon-Jones, 23, said: 'I don’t think it will work. Obesity starts at home, and it depends much more on what the parents are feeding them the rest of the time.
'The ban would hit grown-up workers too - maybe that’s a good thing as some of them need it.'You can go take a long walk off a short pier too, Rebecca.
I can see this ending well for the Council ... not
ReplyDeleteFirstly, I don't think they can retrospectively change the conditions under which a Take-away's planning approval was given without expecting a robust legal challenge - you can't restrict someone's right to operate their business just because it's seen to be good for the cheeldren.
Furthermore, they will just shift the business elsewhere - the local Morrisons/Asda/Sainsburys all have hot counters and I wouldn't bet much on them knuckling to pressure from the Council.
I'm sure we all remember how successful the Schools were in banning "unhealthy" food from their Lunch menus don't we?
Oh, by the way JM ... you really really wouldn't want to move to Salford
ReplyDeleteTime for a five lunchtimes a week, mass chip butty nosh up on the steps of Salford's town hall.
ReplyDeleteWith salt!
Salford Council's own 'some are more equal than others' catering facilities at the Civic Centre offers the following to members & staff:
ReplyDeleteOPENING TIMES: 9.00 am until 2.30 pm Monday to Friday.
MORNING BREAKFAST SERVICE: Serving morning goods (i.e. toast, bacon/sausage barms etc.
SNACK MENU (12 noon until 1.30 pm)
Serving a selection of freshly prepared sandwiches/rolls made to order from a selection of fillings.
Jacket potatoes (containing a variety of hot and cold fillings)
Soup of the Day (selection of bread rolls) including butter portions
Hot pies, pizzas, portions of chips etc.
Salad items consisting of fresh salads.
No doubt, special council exempt 280 hole salt shakers are available too.
And no, don't move to Salford. It's now full of posh BBC types walking around going "Hey up Duck!"
@John Pickworth - good find there, no doubt the Council will put the menu selection down to the errors of the contractors providing the canteen service rather than their own lack of a healthy eating policy.
ReplyDeleteI particularly liked this little gem ..
"Salad items consisting of fresh salads."
... just in case we were expecting Rose petals preserved in Unicorns piss I suppose :0/
Forgot to add, the Civic Centre is within 400 metres of a primary school too.
ReplyDeleteI've also read the policy document referred to in the original post; the council's measure won't apply to the city centre... so the council's staff will still be able to pop over the road for their favourite Pies, Chips and Burgers at lunchtime.
"I can see this ending well for the Council ... not"
ReplyDeleteLet's hope so. But with folks like Rebecca around...
"Time for a five lunchtimes a week, mass chip butty nosh up on the steps of Salford's town hall."
Heh!
"No doubt, special council exempt 280 hole salt shakers are available too. "
LOL! Wouldn't it be amusing if they passed this legislation and found their own canteen shut down?
