It Must Be Hard Water Up North...

The bunting, featuring yellow, green, white and polka dot jumpers to represent the winners’ jerseys in the race, had been hung in Masham, near Ripon, by Harrogate Borough Council following an appeal by the authority to decorate the district.
Over six months, hundreds of schoolchildren, women’s institutes, craft groups and knitters from as far afield as Australia and the Arctic Circle created 23,453 jumpers for the display.
How heart-warming!
A month after the bunting was hung in the town’s Market Place, and less than three weeks before 20,000 visitors are expected to visit Masham to see the race, residents and traders were stunned to see hundreds of the knitted jumpers being taken down by tree surgeons.
How typical. Let me guess, someone complained?
North Yorkshire County Council, which owns the lampposts, said it had asked the borough council to remove the bunting on safety grounds.
It is believed the weight of the bunting increased after rain, causing lampposts to lean.
 Blimey!

Perhaps they should just forget about the bunting, and hang councillors from the lamp posts instead.

  2. Why not send men up ladders to wring them out?

  3. Our lampposts were requisitioned by Blair for the Iraq invasion but the paper mache replicas are still serviceable.

They just aren't hard oop North, Julia.

What, the bunting or the councillors?

  5. That is the quality of lamp posts the council gets by buying from the chief executives brother.

On another note, if the lamp posts are in danger of leaning then the H&S department should step in and have them all removed before someone leans against one and it topples and hurts a member of the those visiting.

Or to put it simply - hogwash!

Just imagine the trouble that dear old George Formby would be in these days! Endless reams of council red tape, health and safety assessments, all just to have a lean on a lamppost and that is before we even get started on his unsafe and unprofessional window cleaning activities!!! ;)

  7. The water "up North" IS actualy hard.

Much of it coming from Limestone areas.
