The work showed five grey pigeons holding up signs including one stating “go back to Africa” towards a more colourful migratory swallow.
One of the pigeons’ signs read “migrants not welcome”, while another held a placard that read “keep off our worms”.
Nigel Brown, communications manager for Tendring district council, said it had received a complaint on Tuesday that “offensive and racist remarks” had been painted on a seafront building.
“The site was inspected by staff who agreed that it could be seen as offensive and it was removed this morning in line with our policy to remove this type of material within 48 hours,” he said. You really couldn’t make it up, could you?
“We would obviously welcome an appropriate Banksy original on any of our seafronts and would be delighted if he returned in the future.”Now, I don’t much approve of the man or of his juvenile left-wing politics, but if there’s a sadder thing to contemplate than a State-approved ‘subversive artist’, I don’t know what it could be…
MacHeath agrees.
Why..... it's political correctness.....GONE MAAAAAAAD !
ReplyDeleteVery funny though! I wonder if Banksy was tempted to go to the local paper about it? Photo of him in a hoodie pointing at the over daubed art work.
And I bet neither party can sense the slightest irony in the situation!
ReplyDelete'but if there’s a sadder thing to contemplate than a State-approved ‘subversive artist’, I don’t know what it could be…'
ReplyDeleteHow about the toe-curling spectacle of art and music teachers ignoring centuries of culture and ingratiatingly exhorting their charges to 'express themselves' in poorly-executed graffiti or rap music?
(PS Thanks for the link.)
It used to be called criminal damage.
ReplyDeleteBanksy should return and paint a mural of three fluffy red squirrels who are looking at a pox ridden grey squirrel, and see how long it takes the council to remove it. Anyway, which anti-immigration council would be bothered about an immigrant that was going to leave and take their offspring with them?
ReplyDelete@Macheath
ReplyDeleteMac old lad,
"...rap music..."
Check your spelling:- you've missed the "c" off.
Mr Banks should take himself off to daub in South Africa, where, I seem to remember, many of the locals were becoming irate about migrating "birds" from Zimbabwe. I'm sure they would find his righteous frescoes morally edifying.
ReplyDeleteSo the 'anti-racist' daub was found to be 'racist' by the 'anti-racist' council.
ReplyDeleteNurse! The screens!
"I wonder if Banksy was tempted to go to the local paper about it?"
ReplyDeleteI think better of him that he didn't...
"And I bet neither party can sense the slightest irony in the situation!"
Nope, I suspect local councils are irony free zones anyway.
"How about the toe-curling spectacle of art and music teachers ignoring centuries of culture and ingratiatingly exhorting their charges to 'express themselves' in poorly-executed graffiti or rap music?"
Yup, that'll do it!
"Banksy should return and paint a mural of three fluffy red squirrels who are looking at a pox ridden grey squirrel, and see how long it takes the council to remove it. "
Heh! I like the way you think...
