LegIron on the modern 'Eat no XXXX' trend:
"Nowadays medical research focuses on single issues. Salt, sugar, fat… these are irrelevancies. By the way, did you know that if you don’t have enough sodium in your diet your body takes it from your bones, making them brittle? The zero salt diet will make you die like a washed up jellyfish. Something modern medicine seems to want to happen.
None of it matters. Burn more calories than you eat, you lose weight. Eat more calories than you burn, you gain weight. It’s really no more complicated than that.
I guess there’s no research money in the obvious answer."
The lady who done nutrition and the chemistry thereof near sixty years ago and has never left off, spending happy hours on Google Scholar etc. avers that it is much more complex than is admitted. The body needs a vast range of inputs and has a complicated set of kit etc. to deal with it. What has happened in her time is that there has been a transformation of eating habits and products as well as people eating rather more than they used to. Much of the stuff in the media at present is too simplified and too often special pleading. Also, too much of the science is too limited in its scope. Time for lunch.

ReplyDeleteProgress has its downside too.
