Modern 'Parenting' Again...

Mrs Green, of Berkeley, Gloucestershire, who lives with partner Josh Smith, 29, and daughter Halle, seven, said she wants to use the letter to raise awareness of autism.
Instead, she's raised awareness of just how utterly selfish and unconcerned she is about the effects of her son's behaviour on everyone else...

And no, the fact the child is disabled and 'can't help it' isn't some magic bullet, either. A dog 'can't help' barking, but that doesn't mean that your neighbours have to put up with noise nuisance.

Modern approaches to child-rearing have been discussed quite a bit over on Tim Newman's blog. It doesn't bode well for the future.

  1. Perhaps you should try raising a child with severe autism. It's a pretty challenging task.

I'm sure it is more challenging than raising a normal child. Raising eg a very intelligent (>130) child or Down's child is also challenging. Doesn't mean free pass to inflict misery, annoyance and discomfort on others.

One line of Scout Promise and Law:
"Think of others before yourself" ; based on Philippians 2:3

    Exactly.

  3. 'raise awareness of autism’

That must surely be a joke. 20 years ago autism was unheard of - now just about every other child (of a certain cohort, at any rate) is ‘on the spectrum’. This strange and seriously fashionable affliction has become a major industry.

Like the fella said: 'curiouser and curiouser...'

  4. It appears that the boot is on the other foot. Instead of a tyranny of the majority over the minority, we now have minorities dictating to the rest of us. Walk a mile in his shoes, we are asked. What a lovely thought, I'd be a mile away from him and I'd have his shoes (™Boiling Frog).

I've no doubt it is. But it's not a 'get out of jail free' card allowing you to discount others' genuine complaints, either, as Pcar points out.

And now it appears to be everywhere. Was it always there & misdiagnosed? Or is it a case that a diagnosis now brings certain benefits?

That's the real aspect of this story I loathed, the fact that this woman clearly feels that others' rights to a peaceful life are subordinate to hers, because her offspring has an 'ism'...
