It has been said that Wells, who wrote the book while living in Horsell village, disliked the town of Woking so much he deliberately made it the first place to be destroyed by the Martians. Having worked there for 15 years, I can understand his feelings. Perhaps it will be a nice place when they finish building it. Penseivat
