Who Says Lightning Doesn't Strike Twice?

A man has died after a serious assault at a care home in Wickford this evening. Police were called shortly before 7pm, with reports that a man in his 60s had been assaulted at a residential care home on Swan Lane.
Despite the efforts of paramedics, the man sadly died. A 43-year-old man from Wickford has been arrested on suspicion of murder.
Swan Lane? Residential care home? Gosh. It's deja vu all over again...
A man was stabbed inside a Wickford care home on New Year’s Eve. Emergency services rushed to Swan Lane at roughly 1pm on Tuesday after reports a man had been injured inside.
A man in his 40s was found inside the home with a stab wound to his back, while a 68-year-old woman from Wickford has been arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm.
The care home is believed to be Longcroft Residential Care Home, although the home declined to comment when contacted by the Echo.
What sort of 'care home' is this, anyway?
Longcroft Residential Care Home specialises in caring for adults under 65-years-old, caring for people with mental health conditions and offering support to people with substance misuse problems.
Ah. I believe that's what we call 'a clue'.

  1. The recorded violence in Care Homes suggests that many residents should be housed in secure hospitals. Violent attacks on staff and other inmates may be due to insufficient secure accommodation or poor mental health assessments/care.

  3. I don't believe these care homes 'specialise' at all. Too often residents in these homes are left to their own devices and usually have minimal interaction with staff and doctors. Most residents have done their time in mental hospitals with doctors reluctant to keep sick people in hospitals. Their view is that people will recover better in the community. Too often this fails. Most care homes don't check rooms and persons for drugs and alcohol and wait too long for re-admission to hospital if a resident refuses to comply with medication. All in all most care homes are too laid back, especially when they house seriously ill people. Just my view.

  4. Is there any connection between the two cases? The man 'in his forties' and the 'man aged 43'. Was this the relative of the first victim getting her own back on a perp?

Add to that lowest-bidder caregivers, and no questions asked about immigration status.

"Well, it is Essex. Aren't they all nutters there?"

    Can confirm! ;)

"I don't believe these care homes 'specialise' at all. "

Or provide genuine 'care' as we'd know it.

"Is there any connection between the two cases?"

If there is, they are being very tightlipped about it. We'll have to wait for the trial.
