Just Daffy...

A council has been branded 'totally bonkers' after it said it would stop planting daffodils for health and safety reasons...

*blinks*

...in case children eat them.
Where is this town of inbreds, then? Wales? Scotland?

Well, would you believe...Cornwall?
St Blaise Town Council in Cornwall, has also denied cutting more than 1,000 of the flowers down after residents planted them in a park.
Dr Mark Evans, from the South West Health Protection Unit, said: 'Daffodils are toxic and severe vomiting and diarrhoea can occur if eaten by mistake.
'Although very unpleasant, most people will recover fully without treatment.'
St Blaise Town Council confirmed it would no longer plant daffodils for health and safety reasons after recent play park inspection training.

Not the sort of training it appears they need most, is it?

Mr West said: 'I'm just bewildered by their decision. This the craziest thing I have heard. Children don't eat daffodils.
'The community will be really sad and disappointed when daffodils bring so much joy to so many.
'The ivy growing along the wall is poisonous. Eating the rubber from the play park climbing frame is poisonous. Where do you stop?'

Please don't give them ideas, Mr West...

  1. This is I'm afraid a case of safetyism gone mental. Yes kids will eat inappropriate things but As a parent of a child who in his much earlier years saw nothing wrong with eating dirt, coal or the expelled contents of his nostrils and which we had to curb in is own best interests, I must say that I've never had to stop him eating a daffodil.

A well managed child will not be eating any daffodils especially not if they are in some public display or on for example a traffic roundabout. Mind you if you are letting your child play on such a roundabout then maybe you've failed your parenting exam.

I did a little bit of searching to find out whether daffodil eating is indeed a scourge causing mass illness and it doesn't appear to be. Judging by two of the stories that came up in the search you either have to be pretty gormless or from a different culture that hasn't seen or lived with daffodils in order to make the mistake of eating them.

See 2009 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/suffolk/8031344.stm and 2021 https://cardiffjournalism.co.uk/intercardiff/business-culture/do-you-know-what-happens-if-you-accidentally-eat-daffodils Even the second source, a lefty outfit, could not find more than 27 people who have had daffodil related vomiting and that was in 2014.

This is a ludicrous overreaction by this Cornish council it really is.

  2. It's a power play because the residents had the temerity to plant them.

  3. It's not that long ago Labour councillors wanted to chop down conker trees so children wouldn't climb them.

The fact that we don't climb the trees to get the conkers was irrelevant.

Yup, and there's worse to come...

I suspect you've hit the nail on the head, there...

Oh, I do remember that! There's probably an app in the Apple store for virtual conkers now, mind you...
