The Day The Music Died...

2011 is turning into a pretty lousy year for celebrity deaths already.

First Pete Postlethwaite (and Zsa Zsa Gabor seems to be chasing him - wonder if S Weasel will revive her Dead Pool?) and now not one, but two great musicians yesterday evening.

The second was 'Japan' bassist Mick Karn (who I must confess I'd actually never heard of!), but the first was Gerry Rafferty, and this one was a sad surprise.

Best known for the iconic 'Baker Street', I always felt this one deserved to be a greater hit than it was:

RIP Gerry...

  1. The Baker St album still gets some hammer in my car. Wonderful production for it's day. Go well Gerry.

  2. RIP to both.

'Stuck in the Middle with You' never fails to lift my mood.

Mick Karn could make a bass sound like no other bassist I've ever heard, a haunting instrument in its own right. Try this one:

  3. Very sad. sadder in fact even than when I found out that Bob Holness didn't play the Sax solo on 'Baker Street' which I told people for years

  4. While I still play the air-sax to 'Baker Street' I always enjoy playing the air-guitar to 'Night Owl'

Yes, sad person that I am, and sadder now Mr Rafferty has departed from us.

  5. I was never a fan of Rafferty, but sad nevertheless.

Ah but Mick karn I met when I interviewed Japan when they supported Blue Oyster Cult. Great musician. He was positively drooling at all equipment that BOC carried with them when we were wandering round backstage at Bristol Colston Hall.

Here's a couple of others I knew who died last year...

  6. Japan reinvented themselves as No-man's backing group and thus contributed to some of the greatest records of the Nineties. Karn was astounding.

  7. ...and Bobby Farrell of Boney M. Perhaps not quite in the same league, but a musical entertainer nonetheless

  8. "Brief lives. Many, unfairly so."

Indeed. And an untimely reminder that none of is are getting younger!

"Mick Karn could make a bass sound like no other bassist I've ever heard, a haunting instrument in its own right. Try this one..."

    That is indeed pretty good.

"...I found out that Bob Holness didn't play the Sax solo on 'Baker Street' which I told people for years"

    You weren't the only one!

"...and Bobby Farrell of Boney M."

Ah, yes, just a few days ago, wasn't it?

  9. Bobby Farrell died in the same city as Rasputin.

City to City was the first LP I bought. There wasn't a bad song on it.
