Should've Stuck To Buzzing The Tower, Maverick...

Capt Honors was a 1983 alumnus of the U.S. Naval Academy and was a naval aviator before holding command. He attended the U.S. Naval Fighter Weapons School, also known as Top Gun.
And we all know how these chaps like to blow off steam. Practical jokes, volleyball and picking up strange women in bars with impromptu karaoke, right?

Sadly, Capt Honours clearly didn't see that film, and he chose a little film-making of his own, which didn't go down too well with the top brass:
In a video obtained by the Virginian-Pilot newspaper, Capt Honors addresses the camera and introduces a series of several lewd video clips, which he acknowledges have drawn complaints.

'As usual, the admiral and the captain have no idea about the contents of the video or movie this evening, and they should not be held accountable in any judicial setting,' Capt Honors says on the video.

'Over the years I've gotten several complaints about inappropriate material during these videos, never to me personally but, gutlessly, through other channels.'
Ouch!
During this introduction, he also uses a derogatory term for gays.
Oh, noes!
Next comes a sequence of what appear to be outtakes in which Capt Honors and others curse.
Sailors curse?!? Get outta here!
Capt Honors observes that comedians who performed on the ship always got laughs when they used 'the f-bomb.'

After that, the officer and others are shown mimicking sex acts.
*faints*
Capt Honors segues to the next segment by saying, 'Finally let's get to my favorite topic ... chicks in the shower.'

Then the film shows clips of pairs of women and a pair of men pretending to shower together. No nudity is shown, but the men's and women's bare shoulders imply they are nude.
Outrageous! Depraved!

One can only be glad Capt Honors wasn't a medical student, or the puritans viewing these videos would have really had their eyes opened...
Cmdr Chris Sims said in a statement sent to The Associated Press that the videos 'were not acceptable then and are not acceptable in today's Navy.'

Commanding officers and enlisted chiefs 'are charged to lead by example and are held accountable for setting the proper tone and upholding the standards of honor, courage and commitment that we expect Sailors to exemplify,' Sims said in the statement.
And, presumably, ensuring that no-one ever has any fun, right?

I mean, I can't think how safe an uptight, repressed, resentful chap at the controls of a multi-million dollar war machine would make me feel...

  1. I can only respond by quoting a perfect example of these long standing problems in the military, as I did on a post, elsewhere, recently. I believe a certain Gunner Milligan exposed a problem with the Third Reich. Its equally outrageous and this sort of thing should be eradicated :
    HITLERGRAM No. 136

  3. Can't have people in the military carrying on like normal human beings now can we?

Next thing they will be behaving like people in other ways and if we are not careful being unwilling to bomb the village to save it.

  4. IMO the difference between today's military & yesterday's is that behaviour which would earn a Nelsonian gaze previously from higher ranks can now be recorded, distributed widely/easily & must eventually be acknowledged.

Also the USN is probably still smarting from the Tailhook saga, even though it allegedly took place in 1991.

  5. There's MUCH better stuff which has gone on in the Military, and which continues to this day!
Ask about the DERR's Ferozasha Parade in Hong Kong!
    Regretfully, I must remain anonymous.

  6. His name is really Captain Honors? That could so be the title of a summer blockbuster - Captain Honors and the Neo Puritans (who also happen to be gag-reflex-inducing warlord hypocrites) of Tomorrow! Starring Jude Law as Captain Honors and the Devil as Himself. And did you say this was from 1983? Talk about a blast from the past - hey baby let's shower together - really? That's all they've got? I thought the military had better things to do with their time, like carpet bomb third world countries with pictures of white people eating McDonalds.

"Aaaaggghhh!!! What have you done to your background, Julia?"

I've given in and gone green! Don't worry, it doesn't extend to my politics... ;)

"His name is really Captain Honors?"

It IS a bit 'Airplane!', isn't it?
