...'What was it that made you use such terms to describe
the pro-British, fiercely-loyal and hardworking Gurkhas, progressives?'
A town risks being 'overwhelmed' by Gurkhas and their families in the wake of the landmark decision to grant former servicemen the right to live in Britain, an MP says.
He's clearly one of iDave's new Conservatives...
The former shadow Defence Minister's letter to David Cameron, reported in getHampshire.com, said: 'This has had a very significant impact over a very short period of time and it is now estimated that 10 per cent of the borough of Rushmoor’s population of approximately 90,000 is Nepalese.'
Better that than 10% Somali or Bangladeshi or Uzbekistani...
And now much is the crime rate lower than the national average?
ReplyDeleteGurkhas fight in the British Army, they also fight in the Indian Army; in fact far far more of them fight in the Indian Army. They should be well paid for their services and receive the kind of pension that will make them very comfortable. Back home in Nepal.
ReplyDeleteI lived in Fleet for a few years, and was always impressed with off-duty Gurkhas. They would dress smartly and behave impeccably at all times. It appeared that they were immensely proud of their old country and fiercely loyal and respectful to their new one, and were only too pleased to show it. We could do with many more people like that.
ReplyDelete"They should be well paid for their services and receive the kind of pension that will make them very comfortable. Back home in Nepal".
ReplyDeleteOne reason why the Nepalese government wasn't falling over itself to support the right of Gurkha's to retire in the UK was precisely because on a comparative level Gurkha pensions did usually make them "very comfortable" if they retired in Nepal and brought in much welcomed foreign currency ...
I seem to remember any complaints about local services being overwhelmed when we had floods of Poles, Latvians, Albanians, Kosovans, Kurds et al were quickly denied by the previous government and swept hastily under the carpet.
ReplyDeleteFunny that!
I don't know Aldershot but presumably Rushmoor is the sink estate? No doubt these Nepalese chaps will soon straighten it out.
ReplyDeleteHi Julia M,
ReplyDeleteiDaves big society at work eh!,
I`d like to have " a very significant impact" on this Mp`s face, with my fist!
Spot on, Woodsy.
ReplyDeleteI'll bet that there is one place in this country where children can play outside safely.
Rushmoor is the Borough in which Aldershot is located. There are some less attractive areas (Cove comes to mind), but mostly it's green-leafed suburbia. For rough estates you need to step over the border into Surrey.
ReplyDeleteHaving received Military Training (Jungle Warfare) from the Gurkhas .. and having the greatest of respect for their abilities & ethos ..
ReplyDeleteI, for one would be more than delighted to have any number of them as neighbours .. in preference to some of the locally-grown English toss-pot, chav, dole-scumbags & druggies who currently infest the town in which I live ..
Bring it on say I ..
PT Barnum,
ReplyDeleteYou have never been to Totland Close then...??
Although I will admit that The Old Dean Estate in Camberley is pretty grim.
"And now much is the crime rate lower than the national average?"
ReplyDeleteBe interesting to find out in a few years time, won't it?
"iDaves big society at work eh!"
Indeed! Anyone would think it was just a soundbite, or something, eh?
"I, for one would be more than delighted to have any number of them as neighbours..."
Ditto!
And you haven't lived until you've eaten a "proper" Gurkha curry .. prepared & cooked by the lads themselves ..
ReplyDeleteConsidering that the majority of Gurkhas are Infantrymen, they put the old A.C.C (Army Catering Corps .. or "Andy Capp's Commandos") to shame ..
