Another Sore Loser...

This time, though, a little bit less technically demanding game was involved:
A bar room contest of the children's game peanuts resulted in the victor having surgery after his "embarrassing defeat" of an opponent who later assaulted him.

Paul Carrick, 40, punched Barry Answorth, 58, in the in the face outside Yello Bar, city centre, fracturing his eye and cheekbones.
Lovely!

Still, at least he didn’t bother testing his defence’s powers of imagination too hard by pleading innocent:
Carrick, of Posterngate, Hull, claimed he could not remember the incident when he was arrested.

He pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm on the day he was due to stand trial at Hull Crown Court.
And the judge wasn’t impressed with his behaviour.
Judge Simon Jack told Carrick: "This was a serious matter. It was an unprovoked attack. You hit a man much older than you for no good reason at all.

"It is right to say you only punched him once, but it must have been a hard punch because it broke his facial bones."
So, some jail time?

Hah! Don’t be silly…
Carrick was sentenced to four months' imprisonment suspended for 12 months.
That’ll teach him.

  1. The comments attached to the original article are hilarious .. and in themselves speak far more eloquently about "Hully Gully's" than I ever could ..

  2. IF it was his first such offence then a suspended sentence is fair and just IMNSHO -it was a single punch, he pleaded guilty and he didn't use a weapon.

Although I'm wondering if Carrick is a trained boxer/martial artist because to break someone's face with a single punch is actually pretty difficult unless the victim has some weakening of the bones.

If he has been trained then he should have gone to prison...because he must have been aware of the damage his punch can cause.

  3. So how much do we get for smacking out Mr Justice Simon Jack (for a first offence, natch)?

  4. Bloody good job that "Peanuts" only involves the bending-back of fingers ..

Had it involved brain cells, by the sound of things, they'd both have been completely "cattle-trucked" .. ;)

    Indeed! :)

    He could have got lucky?

He wouldn't be the only one deserving of a good smack on the nose, would he?

  6. So if the guy he'd hit had fallen down, hit his head, and died, mitigation would be "I didn't mean to hit him so hard." Nope, as any lawyer will tell you, that doesn't count, and nor should it. It's like the 'of previously good character' nonsense. If you are of good character you don't haul off and punch someone.

Sadly, with our debased justice system, it probably does guarantee you a lesser sentence...
