Should There Really Be An App For This..?

Wessex Water has developed a new way to help customers understand what they shouldn’t flush down the toilet.
*boggle*
Many customers have already downloaded the free app where players must intercept different objects which are thrown at the toilet and instead dispose of them in a bin.

The game includes 15 levels and different versions have been created for both adults and children.
It seems the culprits are 'disposable items', as coyly referred to by the head of sewerage services, the unfortunately named Paul Oaten (who must have really felt dropped in it when Lib Dem Mark Oaten was in all the right papers for all the wrong reasons...).

So it seems these people are smart enough to own, operate and interact with a mobile phone but not smart enough to understand that you shouldn't flush sanitary towels and nappies down the loo..?

  1. I had the charming job of unblocking our drain yesterday. Full of hair from the feminine element of the household and tons of grease. YUCK!!

This followed an equally charming session on New Years Eve, when, whilst others were celebrating, I was covered in slime and grease, dismantling the kitchen sink U bend, which had blocked up. Happy New Year? Phooey.

I have to say that whilst carrying out this odious task, my next door neighbour mentioned that he, with no less than five young ladies under his roof regularly has to forage in the bowels of his sewage system, to remove all sorts of impedimenta to the free flow of waste. Things that no sane human would attempt to force down a toilet, so maybe Wessex Water ARE on to something, bizarre as it may appear.

  2. I knew a bloke who'd worked in the sewage works, he said they found all sorts of surprisingly large stuff - teddy bears were not uncommon.

  4. What on earth do you do if you have lost your mobile down the toilet?

  5. Must be a lot of it about. I got a circular from the management company just after Crimbo reminding lessees that "sanitary items such as nappies, towels and cotton buds [sic] should not be be flushed down the toilet as this could potentially block the drains".

  8. Why don't they just issue doggie type pooper scoopers and plastic bags to everyone and stop fitting toilets in the houses? Think of the savings.

  11. When I was an engineer at sea the only time we had issues with the sewage system was when we had wives on board. Condoms, tampons, sanitary towels etc, they used to block the systems at regular intervals. The best bet was when you only had one wife on board, you would not believe how effective it is to hang a used sanitary towel on the handle of the cabin door of the wife concerned to stop this sort of abuse of a normally perfect sewage system.

  12. A humiliating trick played on a woman is not risk-free, Daedalus. Was it worth it?

    Clearly!

"This calls for a classic song... "

    Heh!

" I got a circular from the management company just after Crimbo reminding lessees that "sanitary items such as nappies, towels and cotton buds [sic] should not be be flushed down the toilet as this could potentially block the drains"."

I've worked in offices where those instructions are permanently pinned to the backs of the cubicle doors!

    "Welcome to idiocracy."

    Indeed! *sigh*
