It is not unusual here, for the airports to close, or divert all flights to "small town" airports, at new year, because the smoke from fireworks endangers air safety. (Last night Tegel was "closed" for two hours, 00:00 to 02:00)
It is also not unusual to hear the odd firework all year round. (Allthough posession and use is illegal except for 31/12 and 01/01 of the year)
The poor bastards in Brighton would shitting themselves in their thousands.
Sussex have blamed the obvious stupidity on the Government's slow response to the provision of guidance on the use of wit and sarcasm by police.
A Federation spokesman stated that the necessary brain implants were calculated to undermine a Union which had traditionally relied upon the naivety of its membership to pay inflated subscriptions.
Because I am a sad git, I was fast asleep in bed at 9.30pm on New Year's Eve. This being Costa Rica*, at midnight all hell broke loose for about 90 minutes, including a Dresden-scale display from the nearby park. I said, "bah, humbug," rolled over and went back to sleep.

Oddly, I can't remember fireworks ever featuring during my childhood, when the sound of church bells (or Big Ben on the radio and then TV) was a more common way to signal the new year. They must be a fairly recent phenomenon.

But the commy bastard dockers put a stop to THAT one by being on strike so often, no ships bothered coming any more.
