A campaign to provide pedestrian crossings for all schools in Haringey has divided parents.
How…? Surely a crossing is a
good thing?
Sengul Gunay, 40, of Amhurst Park and her son Huseyin, eight, walk to Woodberry Down Community Primary School every day.
Mrs Gunay said: “I don’t think crossings would make it any safer, I walk my son to school every day and pick him up afterwards because the roads are so dangerous.
"People are always jumping the lights and banging into each other in their cars so I feel it’s safer if I walk with him.”
‘Always’..? It happens every day? Blimey!
Maxine Saunders, 30, of Hermiston Avenue, Crouch End, has two children attending different schools in the borough and feels zebra crossings are both good and bad for road safety.
She said: “In most cases zebra crossings are better but the problem is kids think drivers will definitely stop and they can just run out and be safe.
"In reality, fewer and fewer people are stopping at crossings near schools because it’s so manic during the school run. I think having a lollipop lady helps make it safer.”
Just tell your kids to wait by the crossing until the car is actually stopping, then (and
only then) proceed. It worked when I was taught that.
I've managed to avoid being run over.
It's true - when I was herding goats the kids would just run off without looking. But (most? some?) children can learn how to cross roads safely - the ones who cannot will experience the Darwin effect.
ReplyDeleteIt isn't just kids though, it's adults too who believe you just waltz out directly into traffic without looking on a zebra crossing.
ReplyDeleteXX feels zebra crossings are both good and bad for road safety. XX
ReplyDeleteSome bad news for you darlin' you can not sit on the fucking fence ALL your life!
And Budvar. Don't forget those fucking wierd pratts on push bikes! Not content with illegaly riding on the pavements, those imbicilic bastards use Zebra crossings as if they are some form of bridge over the traffic. They all think they are bloody stoned and living in Amsterdam.
Or worse, 'adults' that is. They saunter up to the crossing, wait for you to stop, turn and walk down the road instead of crossing.
ReplyDeleteIn one particularly incredible case after doing this they walked roughly thirty feet down the road from the zebra crossing, then ran across the road.
With examples like that... *mutter*
Hmmmmm, Haringey eh? Surprised they don't have to dodge bullets as well? Lot's of cultural issues there, wonderfully vibrant with many coming from parts of the world where ped x's, traffic lights, driving licences and insurance are unknown.
ReplyDeleteCompare and contrast.
ReplyDeleteA road safety video from 1975 roughly from the era I grew up in...

I've always felt that this change in approach exemplifies everything that has gone wrong with the UK. From 'look out for yourself' to 'don't worry someone else will look out for you'.
"It isn't just kids though, it's adults too who believe you just waltz out directly into traffic..."
ReplyDeleteYup! Just this weekend, fat African woman walks blithely across the road right in the path of my car, headphones on. Even a blast on the horn didn't make her flinch!
"In one particularly incredible case after doing this they walked roughly thirty feet down the road from the zebra crossing, then ran across the road."
/facepalm

Yup, that's spot on!
