A father who admitted owning a dog that killed his three-week-old son is facing jail. Reggie Young was attacked at his home in Falkland Road, Sunderland, on 20 June 2015 and died in hospital.
Ryan Young, 32, had initially denied owning the terrier-type dog but changed his plea at Newcastle Crown Court. A child neglect charge will lie on file.Yes, you read that right. This case has taken two years to come to court. Still, at least it's over now and...
Oh.
Recorder Nicholas Lumley QC has adjourned sentencing to a future date to allow reports to be prepared./facepalm

ReplyDelete"Young, 30, pleaded not guilty to cruelty to a person under 16, the allegation being he caused suffering or injury, in that Reggie Richardson was attacked by the family dog, causing injury which resulted in his death.
He further denied being the owner of a dog which caused injury while dangerously out of control."
So at the last moment he changed his plea to guilty of the lesser charge of being the owner etc, and the court went for a deal which allowed the neglect to lay on file.
On the one hand, this saves money, on the other hand it allows a neglectful (expletive deleted) to arbitrage the justice system to get a brief jail sentence which will be as little as the court can impose without triggering and AG challenge.

It is possible that there is more than one Ryan Young in the region, but it is an interesting coincidence that a Ryan Young of Hartlepool was in court in 2014, also connected with attacks by bull-terrier type dogs. In this case he was convicted in respect of a Yorkie being injured which, with my untrained eye, looks as if it sustained the kind of injuries seen on bait dogs.

Are these separate people? They do not look similar, but it is difficult to tell from the photos. The Ryan Young in Sunderland is about 8 years older than the Ryan Young in Hartlepool. The one in Hartlepoolwas banned from keeping dogs for 10 years in 2014. I am coming over all Chris Spivey, switching between pictures and trying to work out if losing about 3 stone in two years would make the blobby one look like the thinner one.
Perhaps it is just a bad idea to pick up with men called Ryan Young if they do dags.

ReplyDeleteIt's a common name, but still....
How utterly unsurprising. One hopes the 'report' would mention this if it were the case? However, I suspect that they simply go into detail about the travails the poor man has suffered in his brutish life.
