I Couldn't Have Put It Better Myself...

'Nonsense like this' being..?
Investigating officer Pc Paul Armstrong said: “Hopefully this will send out a clear message that ‘trolling’ people on social media is not acceptable and we will take action against those who do.”
Was this the sort of law & order you envisaged yourself dealing with when you joined the police, PC Armstrong?

I'm sure PC Armstrong thought of the great detectives of yore.

For example, 'Nipper' Read bringing Ronnie Kray to justice for Photoshopping Jack 'The Hat' McVitie with large breasts and subsequently retweeting him in the Blind Beggar pub, later uncovering Reggie's vicious posting of "YOR GAy" on the Facebook pages of those who wouldn't pay protection money.

  2. It's interesting you picked out one of the few critical messages Julia.
Suppose the "troll" had carried out his threat you would be crying on here "police take no action when politician is assaulted".
I really don't give a damn about social media but this case would have been one letter sent to the half-wit taking 5 minutes of police time and 60p in postage.

  4. As much as you - and anyone 'normal' over (dare I say it) 50 years of age - think all this social media stuff is utter shite, it is a fact of modern life. Most major companies will have an online/social media monitoring team based in their control rooms and / or customer service/contact centres. In many cases one gets a faster response via Twitter because more 'twatters' become outraged, a 'storm' is created and a response is generated. For the police, this is also a fact and I really would like to know what proportion of time is spent on average per day dealing with trivial shite like this, anad what that translates into money. Of course should a FB/Twitter comemnt touch onto the boundaries of a 'Hate' crime then whoooopsh! Of course sometimes social media is used as part of a genuine crime and many young people are deeply affected by it. There's nothing you, me or the frontline and back office policing staff can do about it and that PC is just doing his job as it is in 2015. Give him and the rest a break and save your proper criticism for his managers and the government that's reduced policing to this and led to a massive loss of respect and alienation from and to the public.

  6. GEORGE DAVIS IS INNOCENT ! Well maybe that time he was but think what his supporters could OF achieved with TWATTER? Why nail anyone's head to a coffee table when a Twatter storm of outrage can be created?

It depends what said 'troll'/bloody idiot actually said, if it puts the victim into actual fear for their own safety it can be classed as assault. So potentially dependent on what was written, a crime.

  8. Melvin as usual you pop up like a bad smell on stories like these but never answer a direct question.
I speak to decent people, and criminals every day.For every wanker like you there are hundreds of decent people that support the police.I am doing my job properly if criminals hate me.Look at our approval ratings compared to say politicians (failed or otherwise)

  9. Thanks to a bunch of self righteous, politically correct, loonies and supported by politicians from all parties, such insults and threats have been classed as 'hate crimes' and, as such, have to be investigated as these figures are included in HMIC inspections. Insp Gadget, peace be upon him, referred to this in his blogs and nothing has changed since. Before use of twitter, Facebook or computers, these were tagged as idle threats (one which could not be immediately acted upon). Don't blame the poor Plod who is merely following instructions from the Sociology qualified managers on the top floor.

  10. That the educatid WC Jaded eventually found lasting employment, adds considerable weight to the theory that modern society evolves to totally absorb the effects of pernicious and dishonest scum.

  13. "I'm sure PC Armstrong thought of the great detectives of yore."

    *chuckles*

"Suppose the "troll" had carried out his threat..."

How many do? Isn't 'threat assessment' supposed to be a skill they teach the police?

"... that PC is just doing his job as it is in 2015. Give him and the rest a break and save your proper criticism for his managers and the government that's reduced policing to this and led to a massive loss of respect and alienation from and to the public."

I have plenty of criticism available for them too! The point is, without willing foot soldiers, they wouldn't be able to do it.

So when are the police going to start campaigning for this sort of thing to be taken out of their remit?

Never. Because it's a quick win with minimal effort.

"Don't blame the poor Plod who is merely following instructions from the Sociology qualified managers on the top floor."

Same answer. When are these 'poor plod' going to start demanding to do the job they must have envisaged when they joined?
