So Offensive, It Merited Swift Action...

But not so swift it didn't come nearly a half-year after the offense:
Jamie Borthwick has been suspended by the BBC after he used a slur aimed at disabled people on the set of Strictly. A video obtained by The Sun showed the EastEnders actor using the term 'm********s' to describe residents of Blackpool where the show was being filmed at the time.
The term was 'mongoloids' and the time - last November.
The BBC told The Sun on Sunday: 'This language is entirely unacceptable and in no way reflects the values or standards we hold and expect at the BBC. We have robust processes in place for this.'
Just not speedy ones, eh?

I had wondered what possible word they could have been talking about. Lots of words start with m and end in s but I couldn't think of anything in particular. Methodists perhaps? Odd phrase for someone to use. It would never have occurred to me.

But, you know, is he wrong?

Eastenders have viewing figures, year on year, which are trending to zero.
So any body who has said / tapped out hurty things any time after birth can be ejected without compensation and simultaneously reduce production costs.
He obviously was not a member of the untouchable inner BBC circle, where anything is forgiveable.
A pox on both Eastenders and the BBC.

I once used to stay overnight in Blackpool, and fail to see why Al Beeb, supporters of Saville, Edwards, and Linneker, would get upset. Borthwick would have been just as accurate if he said the place was full of fat men in football shirts, as it was when I was there. As for standards, Strictly has been connected with more divorces and accusations of sexual assault than any other reality show on tv. They should hold a competition for viewers to guess which married couple will still be together by the end of the series.

I have met quite a few people with down's syndrome. They all have a distinctive appearance and some level of mental disability, but they are without exception, the kindest and most inoffensive people that you will ever encounter. Presumably that is what residents of Blackpool are like?
