There Must Be Some Other Meaning Of 'Obviously' Common To Southend...

Mr Murdoch, of Hampton Gardens, Southend, said his main instinct was keeping Tara well away from the snake due to fears she could be hurt.
He said: "I was walking my Alsatian puppy when I saw a large snake on the path in front of me. It was about 3ft to 4ft long, raised its head, opened its mouth and stuck its tongue out then slithered off into the long grass near the children's playground.
"I took some photographs and kept my puppy well away from it. There is obviously a colony of them living there in the long grass."
There is...?

Well, don't worry. It's the Jap soldiers who don't realise the war's over you've really got to watch out for...

Thanks to nature documentaries, everyone's an expert these days:

Two dog walkers claim to have spotted a lion stalking a housing estate in Bedford.

The first eyewitness said, “I was stood about four feet away from it and I’ve seen enough National Geographic programmes to know it was on the prowl".

Another woman said: “It looked like it was in stalk mode and was in a position which looked like it was going to pounce."

The animal was last seen heading off in the direction of a neighbouring pig farm. Locals speculated that it could have been a pig.

Lucky man. It's rare to spot a snake in the UK. They only appear when they get the urge to stick their tongue out at someone...

The witness stood four feet from a prowling lion and survived? Remarkable. Tiddles the tabby must have been having so much fun that day...

One snake obviously extrapolates to a colony. Mayhap the singleton escaped from someone's exotic pet collection? Come a turn in the weather, guess what's going to happen? And you are absolutely right, we should be more afraid of enclaves of Japanese soldiers. I hear tell that a 'nest' of snipers/vipers has just been unearthed in the Metropolitan district of Dudley. You would certainly get a 'Nip' from these fellas. As for the snake- maybe not, unless the ambient temperature rises to 25 degs. consistently over a five day period. Of course, I could be talking complete and utter bollocks.

Oh, good grief! Is it Silly Season yet again?

"Mayhap the singleton escaped from someone's exotic pet collection? "

Most likely. The discarding of exotic pets bought by people who then get bored with them is sadly not uncommon.
