A police officer who lied about being repeatedly attacked by her fictitious ex-boyfriend has been sentenced. Nadia Thurley, 29, a probationary officer with Hampshire police, alleged she had been assaulted 14 times over a seven-month period.
Thurley, who has complex post-traumatic stress disorder, denied perverting the course of justice but was found guilty after a trial.
I'm sooooo tired of seeing 'PTSD' used as an excuse for everything, especially when it's someone who have never been in a war.

“Judges have been told to consider more lenient sentences for offenders from “deprived” or “difficult” backgrounds. […] The guidelines on “difficult and/or deprived background or personal circumstance” state that these factors include poverty, low educational attainment, experience of discrimination and insecure housing.”

That ‘low educational attainment’ in particular sets alarm bells ringing: I’m reminded of the classic example used to define chutzpah - the man who, having murdered both his parents, demands that the judge be merciful because he is an orphan.
It took 150 officers to investigate someone (the boy friend) who did not exist? I dunno, but I would have thought that questions about his existence might have come up early in the investigation? Why can we find no actual record of this person? So that we can interview him?
Regarding PTSD, I note (both here and more generally) the lack of any indication as to what the traumatic experience was that caused the disorder? A cynic might wonder if it was being told "No" by someone perhaps?
According to the judge, these were "serious" offences. Why then has the crim been handed an 18-month suspended prison sentence + meaningless "150 hours of unpaid work and . . . 40 days of rehabilitation activity"? In other words she hasn't been punished. Nor has she been compelled to contribute financially in any way to the waste of money caused by her allegations.

Ugh! It's something I'd never expect to see under a 'Conservative' government. What a shame we don't seem to have one...

We are rarely told that, and just have to take it on trust, like the justice system always seems to.
