A serial criminal with more than 200 previous convictions who broke into a Norwich business and stole six e-scooters has walked free from court.
Wha..? How?
Hallam's probation officer told magistrates that Hallam had recently lost his mother from cancer and that one of the last things he promised her was that he would "stay out of trouble".
Liar as well as thief then?
Hallam was sentenced to a 24-month community order that requires him to comply with a drug rehabilitation programme and wear a monitoring tag for four months. In addition, he was ordered to pay a total of £214 in charges to the court. Magistrates decided that a compensation fee "was not necessary" despite the stolen goods never being recovered. For once, the EDP commenters seem to agree, and so far haven't descended into the usual slanging match. This one is particularly good:
I LOL'd!

Forgive me if I have told this story before.
About 20 years I arrested a horrible man for shoplifting several bottles of scotch from M+S. As I arrived he was giving the two security guards terrible racist abuse as they were both black.
Back at the station I interviewed him and he admitted the offence. I did a check on him and he had over 600 previous convictions. He was from Glasgow and was in his mid 60's. I worked that he had been convicted on average every six weeks his whole adult life.
He was charged and I asked the custody Sergeant to refuse bail because of his offending history, which he agreed to do. When a suspect is refused bail he is entitled to phone or consult a solicitor to speak for him. The solicitor had left so I phoned him and handed the receiver to the criminal. In a very loud Scottish voice my prisoner said " You won't f%cking believe this, they aren't giving me bail. They think I've got 600 previous but I've only got 400, some b@stard in Glasgow uses my name when he gets nicked". We all collapsed in laughter. 400 convictions? Ok Sir on your way.....600 you're staying in ...
Jaded
"...on average every six weeks his whole adult life."
My god, the amount of wasted time and effort!
