Add ‘Sampling’ To The List Of Things Social Workers Don’t Understand

Over at the ‘Social Work Blog’, which is always good for a laugh or two, they attempt to cheer up their readership by referring to a poll they claim shows they are ‘loved’ by the public:
Social workers reading this will cheered by the latest news of how popular you all are. An online poll here at the headquarters of our parent company RBI found that two out of three participants believed social workers to be "unsung heroes".

Only one out of three believed social workers to be interfering busybodies.
Hmmm, spot the error…
We can also assure you that ComCare staff were a very small proportion of the hundreds that voted - there are lots of magazines based here, from farming to hairdressing to computing.
Well, yes indeed, there are lots of magazines, covering lots of different topics.

But the people writing them are all firmly drawn from the pool marked ‘media people’. Specifically, ‘magazine publishing company people’. So not really a cross-section of society...

Fail!

Or to put it another way, 33% of the liberal, chattering, middle classes can't stomach social workers either.

Heh... :)

Those who were polled were not a cross-section of society.

Whereas those who meet with social workers regularly are a truly cross section of society...
