I Don't Think That's Why They Call It An 'Exercise' Yard...

The killer who murdered Rhys Jones plunged a makeshift knife into a fellow teenage murderer in a twisted bid to become 'top dog' in a youth jail.

Sean Mercer, 18, stabbed Jake Fahri, 19, four times in the back with a sharpened pair of tweezers during the attack in a prison exercise yard.
Not that anyone should think this was a 'Thunderdome' style fair fight, either:
He was helped by a fellow inmate who held Fahri as Mercer attacked him with the tweezers, which had been made into an improvised knife.
Can you be 'top dog' if you need the help of another dog..?

What other outcome can be expected when dangerously disturbed young men are housed together?

When properly performed, a lobotomy will render safe any murderous criminal. Employed solely for such a purpose, a lobotomy is a vile operation, not least as a result of its permanence. However the safety of prison staff, other prisoners and the ultimate safety of the public must outweigh the individual rights of pathetic and dangerous creatures.

MTG, especially if said lobotomy is performed with a Colt 1911 .45 ACP.

Libertarians have their weak moments and I would have preferred your rational condemnation, HC.

The more that kill each other in prison, the better.

Prison guards should be there to ENCOURAGE them in this usefull hobby, NOT hinder them.

Yes, you are trying to be pack leader, its not about some abstract form of invidualism or a fair fight. The collective will always defeat the individual.

Also the kind of weapons they (prisoners) resort to arent conducive to a decisive one-hit-kill, lots of stabbing, slashing and hitting is neccesary. People tend not to sit compliantly still for that.

Didn't Kissinger say something, apropos the Iran/Iraq war, about 'pity they both can't lose ?'

Translated to this YOI fracas that would mean 'pity they both can't beat the shit out of each other'.

'Don't house them together', comes to mind...

"The more that kill each other in prison, the better."

It is, as anon says, a shame they couldn't both have lost!

"Also the kind of weapons they (prisoners) resort to arent conducive to a decisive one-hit-kill..."

The lack of which is probably against their 'uman rights, I suppose... ;)

Um JuliaM, the problem is that there are so many of them, hence they get housed together.

MTG: a lobotomy is a waste... the Chinese have the right idea, their official term for those types of guys is 'organ donor'.

WV: fistbal (heh)

Tweezers?

What do they get tweezers for in prison?

Plucking their eyebrows, disentangling knots in their embroidery thread, somehow I don't think so.

The "pool ball in the long sock thwack over the head" as in Scum always seemed a quick and effective option to me.

Would anyone want one? It's bound to be well-used.

Apart from the brain, ofc, and we can't do those yet.

Nah, those murderers are young enough, so even if they ruined their liver a bit, it'll fix.

Keep them around for 1-2 years on good food and exercise (as we do now anyway) and their hearts, livers and kidneys will work just fine for someone more deserving.

Of course their other bits (bones, skin, eyes, and lots of other obscure but much needed spares) will also be useful and in far better nick than the stuff we're currently harvesting from old cadavers, which often is a serious health risk in itself, but we have to since there are not enough young cadavers to supply all that we need. And if the crim's cadaver is totally riddled with whatsits, there is always a dearth of donor cadavers for medical students that could be solved this way.

I know it's a bit ghoulish at first, but the grim reality is that their continued life means that many others have to die because of lack of resources, so, the death penalty that would normally have been meted out to them is simply transferred onto others whose only crime is to get sick and need expensive meds.

Remember, we abandon people to die early or go blind before their time for a fraction of what it costs to keep one of those toerags in jail for a year... and I reckon that is far more amoral than then Chinese method.

Just as with the prohibition drugs, it's not a question of preventing the bad things in life from happening, just where we decide to defer them to.
