Although never intended to be a Christmas record, the mention of Christmas in the lyrics (and the fact it was therefore released in December 1980) took it almost to the top spot, and some believe it would have got there too, if not for the murder of John Lennon and the hasty release of two of his singles...

Yes I like this one ☺
Of course, it was a CND anthem back in the day when all good Lefties were on the take from the Soviets [or doing it for free]; trying to persuade us to disarm ourselves, the commie bastards.

True, but I don't believe we should let the Devil appropriate all the best tunes... ;)
Oh, I think it was always meant to be peacenik-ish. Stil and all, good tune.
And thej other CND anthem was teh MASH single 'Suicide is Painless.' The commies loved to play it on the Student Union juke box. Only problem was, the B side was the Sousa-like "MASH March." We used to play that every time some dippy pinko put the A-side on. Money well spend - it sounded like a West Point passing-out parade. They took it off, eventually.
