Specially trained police officers and a chaplain spent 17-hours trying to talk down a man from a notorious suicide spot.
The 37-year-old paced along Sugar Loaf cliffs at Beachy Head, near Eastbourne, as officers offered support.
Bet they thought the worst that could go wrong was he’d jump…
But despite the surveillance, the man, who had reportedly told officers he wanted to jump, went missing at midday, triggering a two hours police and coastguard search.
Huh..?
A man was later arrested on suspicion of committing criminal damage.
Because ‘giving the police the slip while they are supposed to be carefully looking out for your welfare’ isn’t a crime. Yet.

Simples. He was a gull in disguise. Could therefore fly to another place for criminal intent (like, erm, pooing on people, the bastard)
Although descriptions cannot be issued for fear of offending minorities, the fuzz were looking for someone with feathers. And a beak.
Sorry I dont understand this story. Are you criticising the police or not? What was he meant to have damaged?
Are the police meant to let him die? Imagine the Daily Mail headlines then.
Jaded
Not sure why police were ever deemed responsible for trying to talk down suicides in the first place. It is a mental health issue not a criminal matter.
They should simply have created a large "grid" on the beach below, putting the shoulder number of every Officer there into each of the grid's boxes & collected £5.00 from each Officer present ..
Then explained the "Rules" to him ..
That whichever Officer's "box" he lands in, is declared the winner & gets to keep the "pot" ..
Then invited the self-pitying, time-wasting twat to jump ..
He'd soon have come down of his own accord ..
Simple ..
PS .. Only fair to give the old "Devil-Dodger" a go too .. ;)

Well, yes. They cordoned off the clifftop, inconvenienced everyone and then....took their eyes of the ball? WTF?
As for the damage, I'd love top know that too.
