Croydon’s Enriching Cultural Diversity

Two men were seriously injured in a clash between Tamil gangs in West Croydon on Saturday.

Gang members from the Tooting Boys battled with Croydon's Jaffna Boys on the London Road.
Lovely….
Tamil community leader Patrick Ratnaraja said he was concerned about such incidents and would like reassurance from the police.

He said: “Greater London Authority member Steve O'Connell has been very helpful in dealing with community issues and has reassured me that he will facilitate a meeting for the Tamil community with the borough commander."
Oh..? A bunch of scumbags knocks seven bells out of a bunch of other scumbags and the police are keen to ‘facilitate a meeting’ with ‘the community’?

Does this practice extend to other ‘communities’? How about the ‘football hooligan’ community?

No? Then why the Tamil 'community'?

Between Tamil gangs ? Then the Tamil Community Leader can fascillitate a meeting in his own community with his own people and bang their heads together.
...
Not much point in him being "Leader" otherwise.

The implication in the post that the 'Tamil community' is equivalent to the 'football hooligan community' is fatuous.

By definition, all football hooligans are criminals. Are you claiming that all Tamils are criminals?

Here's a better question. How did Patrick Ratnaraja come to the position of 'community leader'? Was he elected? If not, how else did he claim that mantle and why are the police apparently accepting this at face value?

Think about that and come back when you've got some politics.

Makes a nice change from credit card fraud at petrol stations. Thirty years of civil war in Sri Lanka and now they're fighting amongst themselves here. Nice.

Spot on AP - interesting that anon got this so wrong. As wrong aqs that dingbat Miliband on Clarke today - he needs to go (M).

All Tamils are Tamils, their homeland is elsewhere.

Surely it is (should be) a 'hate crime' if someone is attacked simply because of their background [race/ religion/ ethnicity] - even if the attackers are [persons of similar background] ?

I await the day the Police decide they need to liaise with the 'White-European-non-Daily-Mail-reading-steak eating-smoking' community. But last time I was in Croydon (not my fault, the Ex used to visit the IKEA there) we, the above community, were a minority.

So that's why they used to say "Put a Tiger in your tank" ..

They probably think Croydon is the Khyber Pass...well actually it is...if you're a cockney anyways.

As anon asks, why IS he 'leader'? Who elected him?

Can I stand as 'leader' of the 40-something female WoW-playing 'community'? Where are the elections held?

"By definition, all football hooligans are criminals. Are you claiming that all Tamils are criminals?"

Hmm, perhaps 'football fans' would have been a better analogy, then?

" Thirty years of civil war in Sri Lanka and now they're fighting amongst themselves here. Nice."

I wonder how many came here as refugees!

"...that dingbat Miliband on Clarke today - he needs to go..."

I find it dreadfully amusing that the Labour partisans immediately start calling for him to go, despite hiss status as most wet liberal Justice Sec ever, and the burning desire of the Tory right-wing to also see him go.

It's like they just can't help themselves...

Good point!

"...we, the above community, were a minority."

If only! A 'minority' would get better treatment!

"So that's why they used to say "Put a Tiger in your tank" .."

LOL!

Oh dear Anon... perhaps you should come back when you are free of politics and can see some sense.

You see, not everything is a political game: some of it is just people behaving badly and other people mouthing off because they like the sound of their own voice.

Politics is theatre, as Alistair Cooke once said.
