Local councils and government departments were supposed to fly the European flag today to mark Europe Day.
However, Euro-sceptic Tory leaders of Basildon Council refused to hoist it outside the Basildon Centre.
For once, I can be proud of Basildon!

Until we leave the EU the only flag I'll consider flying is the Jolly Roger. I do have a St George's flag on my registration plate but that's because I can't find one with a skull and there's no way I'd ever display the worthless EU rag.
The EU flag is deliberately bland, unprovocative and utterly uninteresting, designed by committee and reflecting nothing.
Its only purpose is to put a small splash of colour on construction site boards that declare the work is 'funded by a grant from the EU' which, er, is funded by the people walking past the site. Less skim offs and chunky Brussels wages, of course.

I reckon a few others councils didn't fly the flag either but kept quiet about it.
Should have flown it - having lit it first.

Luckily, mine is plain!
"Should have flown it - having lit it first."
Now, there's a great idea!
