She's forgotten the other nationalised industries that cost the taxpayer a fortune - mining, shipbuilding, railways, steel making, car making, etc etc etc. I doubt the taxpayer is a penny better off for nationalisation, and most likely severely worse off. Thats before one accounts for the utterly sh*t service that all nationalised industries provide to their 'customers'.
It appears that this person has never looked at history because if he had he would know that rail transport started as private companies. Private companies that gave good service to the customers. Then came the Labour party and nationalisation so brining rail transport to its knees. Because of this we had Beeching closing far too much of the network - and it still didn't pay or give a descent service. Now we are left with a bastidisation of a network where no one has responsibility for anything. Maybe it should be returned to the system it started with - private companies owning the track and the rolling stock necessary to provide the service. Then let them sink or swim without any government help.
Nationalised companies run for the benefit of the workers, and the general public all getting a cut of the profits, what a wonderful idea, I'm surprised no one has thought of trying this before. Whats that? It has been tried before and in every time and every place it has been an unmitigated disaster? Well I'm sure that John has thought of a way of making it work this time.Stonyground
With all the public money being bunged at the franchises I'm beginning to think that we have nationalisation by the back door. Why should the public fund any private company? Isn't that the job of the shareholders?
"Thats before one accounts for the utterly sh*t service that all nationalised industries provide to their 'customers'."Who'd want to go back to the days of British Rail..?"Now we are left with a bastidisation of a network where no one has responsibility for anything."And we've seen the consequences of 'no responsibility' systems, as Stonyground points out.....
