It's Not Just 'Conservative Traditionalists' That Should Be Infuriated...

In a move which will infuriate Conservative traditionalists, the Ministry of Justice will announce that Ashwell prison in Rutland, Lancaster Castle, Lancashire, and Morton Hall women’s jail in Lincolnshire will close with the loss of more than 800 places by July.
Just what we can't afford to lose - prison spaces from a desperately overcrowded system! What sort of idiot would...

Ah:
The move is a clear sign that Justice Minister Kenneth Clarke has abandoned the 'prison works' philosophy of former Tory Home Secretary Michael Howard.

It signals Mr Clarke’s determination to go ahead with controversial plans to reduce the prison population by thousands and will lead to accusations that the Tories have become increasingly soft on law and order.
What strange hold does this walking calamity have over iDave? How comes he isn't relagated to the back benches?
The closure announcement follows Mr Clarke's decision to scrap plans for six new prisons, including five superjails each holding 1,500 inmates.
If prison 'doesn't work', I guess we'd better look for something else when (if) we finally catch the killer or killers of Joanna Yeates, then?

What about a slow, long term release implant of prozac

Well, if the law won't protect the citizen, then citizens will have to protect themselves. Ooops, sorry, I forgot. That would be the most serious crime in the book, wouldn't it, "taking the law into your own hands;" much more serious than murder, saying anything about Islam, armed robbery, etc.

Never mind how come Clarke isn't booted to the back benches, how come he's even in the fucking Tory party? One of the biggest Europhiles there is and doesn't give a rat's ring-piece for what people in Britain want. Ah... I think I just answered my own question, didn't I?

He is there as a sop to the Lib Dems and to make the party appear less right wing. (Which is a pity because it would be more popular if it was more right wing.
Nulabor Blair had John Prescott onside to please the unions.

For the prisoners? Or for Clarke?

"Well, if the law won't protect the citizen, then citizens will have to protect themselves."

Easier done in a country where the means is available.

"Ah... I think I just answered my own question, didn't I?"

Yup :)

"May not need the 800 spaces if this catches on..."

Post coming up about that!

"Does prison work?"

It depends - what's its role? Rehabilitation, punishment, or just getting the bad guys off the streets?

That one works, for certain.
