"Do you enjoy working in the laundry?"

Prison chiefs are to spend almost half a million pounds quizzing prisoners about their quality of life.

Inmates at almost half of the country’s jails will be asked if they feel looked after and how well they get on with prison officers.

They will be questioned on their washing facilities, whether they are allowed enough time on the telephone and if they sleep well.
I…I just…
The Ministry of Justice is to press ahead with the survey, an annual exercise since 2002, despite massive cuts to the departmental budget. It is expected to cost taxpayers an astonishing £449,000 – a 6 per cent rise on the 2010 cost.
GAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!
Prisoners are even asked if their stay ‘feels like a punishment’.
If anyone answers ‘Yes’ to that, I’ll be surprised!
The Prison Service defended the decision to go ahead with the survey. A spokesman said it helped prison governors make sure facilities were acceptable.
To whom?

I’d be happy to pay more in taxes for them to be far less ‘acceptable’, but I’m pretty sure I don’t feature on your list of ‘clients’ whose concerns you feel a need to address, do I?

All prisons should be run along the lines of military prisons. Rations should be basic and designed to keep prisoners healthy but that should be all. No recreation facilities and no media. Visits with a partion in the way via intercom. No physical interaction. Make them unpleasant to deter anyone wanting to go back inside.

Hmmmm...the natural assumption here that the results will be used to make life more comfortable for prisoners.

If it were me I would be making use of the results to make life a whole lot more difficult in a million subtle ways whilst ensuring I stayed *just* inside of the law.

This is not only a waste of money but also a waste of time. All the information obtained is duplicated in the inspection report made every year by the Prison Inspectorate. So why do we need to spend money on this?

It seems like only a few posts ago I was asking if criminals were 'users' of the criminal justice system.

This will be the perfect opportunity for HMP clientele to point out that all those clanging doors banging shut with echoes of doom stigmatizes certain clients while making others feel 'vulnerable'.
Best Practise Solutions might include felt edging on all doors.

If only!

Me too :)

Indeed! And it's no longer possible to avoid the conclusion that, to the prison service, that's just what they are, isn't it?

Or just keep them shut 24/7...
