The Big Issue

Catherine Hughes on the claimed link between obesity and dementia:
A great deal of money must have been spent to support these research projects. Significant funding to tell us what we already know: that obesity is a health risk. It is undesirable. It is very bad. As someone who is both middle aged and obese, I am very well aware of the risks associated with my current size (just shy of morbidly obese with a fluctuating BMI of between 38 and 39). I don't need more research to tell me how dangerous it is. I need to know how to cure it.
Eat less, exercise more. As the meerkat says, ‘Simples!’

But Catherine doesn’t want to hear that.
Diets don't work. They may have a short-term effect but, unless you can maintain a celebrity-like iron grip on your eating for the rest of your life (and few can) they are not a permanent solution and can have negative effects.
So all those ‘Slimmers of the Year’ immediately ballooned back to their former weight, or went off the deep end under the strain? Really, Catherine? All of them..?

And why is it necessary to describe it as ‘maintaining an iron grip on your eating’?

You want to be slimmer, but you don’t want it to require any effort on your part? Well, good luck with that
For some people, like me, they don't work at all, because of complex endocrine deficiencies that are only recently being properly investigated, documented and understood.
A commenter (Slateski) remarks how extraordinary it is that these ‘complex endocrine deficiencies’ are almost completely unknown in poor countries, like the Sudan. Must be something in the genes..?

He's then moderated out, of course, for his sinful, impure thoughts...
There are pieces of the puzzle – the social elements, the dietary issues, the medical problems, the genetic picture, the psychological factors – that are still missing. And it is on that absent information that our research efforts ought to be focused.
Because then it’s not your fault. Right, Catherine?

How about a heavy-duty office stapler applied to the lips? Cures all known endocrine problems.

Condom: check. Two paper bags: check. Bag of flour: check.

Get your tent, luv, you've pulled!

Fat, Greggs-munching, self-indulgent piece of lard. Betcha she's not quite as understanding of the poor smokers who have to do without their fix whist her sweaty, malodorous flab flobs over the seat divider on a long-haul flight.

Blame it all on your genes, but Catherine Hughes can be assured of something - there weren't any obese slobs in Changi.

WV: carks - we can only dream.

"on the claimed link between obesity and dementia" ..

There is indeed, a well-proven link between obesity & dementia ..

The fat bastards simply forget either the word "NO" .. or they completely forget to stop cramming their gluttonous faces at every given opportunity ..

But of course, obesity is never their own fault .. is it ?

Thank you Catherine Hughes , Thank you! You've just SAVED MY LIFE!!!

Seriously, your brilliant article has
given me HOPE FOR THE FUTURE.

For years I have been coughing up my own body weight in horrible brown 'tar' every morning.

I've seen all the doctors and specialists and had all the scans. Nothing worked and none of them could even give me a diagnosis.

I'm obviously unable to work and have been sitting at home on ESA getting more and more depressed.

I've been at my wits end. I've tried every treatment going, hell I thought for a time it might be due to the 80 Capstan Full Strength I smoke daily. Crazy right?

But now thanks to you it is all clear:complex endocrine deficiencies.

How could I not have known? Why didn't the doctors tell me? Right, I'm off the 1.claim DLA and 2. Start a Lobby group.

Eh? Endocrines are glands aren't they? Does that mean she's missing glands? Wha…???

There's a saying round here about such large women..."didn't know whether to f*ck it or fight it"...for some though it's a case of "you'd hafta f*ck it cos you certainly couldn't fight it". :D

English Viking said...

The only problem she's got with glands is that she's eaten too many.

Bet she uses a knife and fork though. Can't use her fingers, can't get 'em in her mouth - too fat.

Just a quick question but would the people who have commented here make similar comments to fat people in the street or have they outgrown that sort of behaviour?

The quick answer is yes. The long answer is: I can't abide people who make pathetic excuses and flat out refuse to accept responsibility for their own actions whether in real life or behind an anonymous internet username. MOST normal people...when not aided and abetted by an army of victim - enablers paid for out of taxpayers cash...grow out of that sort of behaviour in early childhood with some common sense guidance.
...
Your question begs another question...would any one of them have the nerve to stand face to face with me whinging about their "problems" and dare to slip their hand into my purse to pay for their "treatment" ? I can tell you that would be met with a short sharp slap and a shove to assist their departure from my presence.
...
It's all relative...innit.

The "eat less and excercise more" theory seems plausible, but I'm not convinced.

The body has control systems which should take just the nutrients it needs, and dump the excess.

I don't know why there's such an increase in breakdown of this system. Eating less would help those who suffer from it, but it's a bleak prospect. Clearly, a lot are not up to the challenge.

Why are so many people so aggressive and spiteful about the subject?

I eat what I like, and do no artificial exercise. My system handles it admirably. If it didn't, Im not convinced that I'd have sufficent will-power to regulate my weight by diet.

Paul said...

Expect a lot of very hostile reactions then.

You bully me for being overweight (and for no other reason - it's a lifestyle choice), I'll bully you for a characteristic that you have that I don't like.

It breeds hostility. Denormalise me and I'll denormalise you back. Smokers have to put up with similar treatment all the time. If you want the freedom to indulge your own vices, give similar treatment to others please. Or we'll turn on you.

I'm not asking to be seen as a victim - I'm not. I'm saying that lots of people have their own problems to deal with without negative crap from others.

We were on 6000 calories a day in rugby training. I tended to blubber and did less and did extra training. Generally bowling 40 overs a week and scoring runs, I put a stone and a half on in some summers. Others stayed trim on the same diets and resting.
We all lose weight on about 1500 calories a day, but some shovel pies and lager without rivaling my belly. Research is pointing back towards ecto, meso and endo morphic metabolisms.
Whatever, Haddock is right. I speak as a fat bastard in possession of a revenge ice-pick! I'm taking his advice and am on the way down.
I tend to believe we are 'ill' for other reasons, rather like a stressed herd.

English Viking said...

Paul,

You could always bully me for being average weight, if you want.

HA HA Look at you. You don't have an ounce of fat to spare! You look so f*@@ing normal. (It's not really working, is it?)

You haven't got a disease; you are not ill; it's not your glands.

You're just a greedy pig.

You fat nob.

BTW I regularly abuse fat tossers in the street.

C'mon mate, leave off the pies.

"...Nanny Fruitcake in California is taking direct action by forcing restaurants to print the calorie count on the menu for every item so there is no excuse for ignoring them."

And didn't I see something somewhere that proved it made absolutely no difference whatsoever?

"I eat what I like, and do no artificial exercise. My system handles it admirably. If it didn't, Im not convinced that I'd have sufficent will-power to regulate my weight by diet."

But would you then demand 'victimhood status' and that the government research went into proving that it wasn't your fault?

That's what annoys me about this woman - whether she weighs 10 stone or 20 isn't my concern. It's up to her.

"I'm not asking to be seen as a victim - I'm not. I'm saying that lots of people have their own problems to deal with without negative crap from others."

If they really did have their own problem, they wouldn't spend so much damn time trying to assure everyone else that it's not their fault, would they?

"My but you all are obviously a bunch of tough , hard as nails athletes."

I'm certainly not. But then, I'm not the one telling the government how it should direct its research money, am I?

I'm always amazed how the laws of thermodynamics apparently don't apply to the obese.

It's nothing short of magical; if they could only learn to harness this power they would be wizards, capable of suspending the laws of physics at will.

It would reverse the laws of entropy and break the grip of OPEC. People creating fats out of nothing at all, or creating more stored calories than have actually gone in; if we could replicate this in a test tube we would not need nuclear power. Maybe we wouldn't even need conventional arable farming.

Yes, yes, more research in to the perpetual energy bio-generator.

Okay, point taken. But some of your commentators are sticking the boot in with great glee. Sounds like some of them never grew out of playground bullying. Fat people are better company that bitter ones.

Maybe but I find that the company of smokers is a more honest company. Ask any smoker why they smoke and nine times outta ten you'll get an honest answer...usually 'cos I'm a tard with no will power' or 'because I enjoy it'.

But ask any Gut Bucket why they have a BMI the size of the national deficit and you'll get an excuse.

Big bones...complex endocrinals..

How many fatso's actually say 'because I eat to much and don't do enough'.

And I speak from experience. Aged 14 I had a 44" waist. I couldn't see my own feet let alone me cock.

Took two years of hard drinking, drugs, martial arts and screwing everything in a skirt to get me down to a 32".

Zaphod said...

Hey Shinar, that's a pretty demanding exercise routine! But I could probably handle most of it. :-)

I think you have a number of rather spiteful commenters here.
I'm not in any way defending someone with no willpower who lets themselves go and expects society to pick up the problem. But I would say that being overweight is not as simple or straighforward as avoiding chips, cakes and McDonalds and getting excercise!
I can put on weight by looking at a cream bun and I don't even like them. I can't remember when I last had a 'fast' meal or anything fried. Since the age of 40 almost everything I do has a sub-text of keeping weight off, and I have mostly succeeded. It can be done. But to do it I eat considerably less than most friends, while I get at least as much excercise as they do. I have done diets and gyms with little long term effect.
It's not as simple as you fortunate thin people seem to think.

Shinar's Basket Case said...

I know there are some gits out there who can really eat whatever they want and never get fat...

...and I have an overwhelming desire to punch them. Luck bastards that they are.

I'm with you on the 'eating considerably less than my mates'. And that is probably the 'key' to weight loss.

Everyone is different. Some people can eat 3k of calories a day and not gain weight...yet they do nothing more energetic than fondle the tv remote. Others, like you and me, only have to have a MC Wet dream and we need to clothes shop.

My 'stay the same weight' level seems to be about 1200 calories a day. If I eat anymore than that I will gain weight...very quickly. The 2200 cals a day for an adult male is for that guy with the 2.5 kids...ie Mr Statistical Average.

No 'complex endoctrin-whatis' about it. No 'big bones'. IF I EAT TOO MUCH THEN I GET FAT and by 'too much' I mean too much above my personal 'safe' intake.

Ah well I was lucky. My first real life non imaginary girlfriend was a genuine nymphomaniac (a horrible debilitating condition btw).

To quote Father William:"
And the muscular strength which it gave to my jaw..."

Sure burned the calories.

There's a difference between people that moan that they are fat and claim they're ill to everyone who asks (even if it's quite clear that they are) and those who just hate fat people whatever they do or don't do. Hatred, if you like.

Most people here haven't made the distinction so I assume they fall into the latter category.

(Or, rather than behaving like intolerant idiots, we should all embrace each other's differences unless it causes us harm. There are some people that won't, but that's OK too. The difference is when there is a collective hatred of something, and that's much more difficult to live with for those in the out-group.)
