I Think Someone’s Missing The Obvious Here…

Jonathan Taylor, defending, said his client’s benefits had been stopped and he had no money at all.

“His first resort was to borrow, then he tried begging, and eventually stole some steak,” added Mr Taylor.
Didn’t the option of ‘getting a job’ occur to him at any point?

Still, at least he had good taste in thieving steak, and not hamburger!

Sadly, actually getting a job is very difficult these days.

I hope if you are ever in those circumstances you remember this and obviously make the choice not to steal.

Good luck.

"Unemployed man dares to steal something to eat". He should be whipped and shipped out to Australia, Julia.

He was so unlike those thieving plod in well paid jobs, who were simply greedy. Like PC Neil Bull of Northamptonshire (3 specimen counts of shoplifting non-food items); the well heeled shoplifter, Detective Chief Inspector Jim Torbet (who topped himselfed to evade justice.)

Surely you remember Chief Inspector Kim Molloy....you know....the one who couldn't afford her cosmetics but was cleared of shoplifting by an excellent legal team which poor Jonathan Taylor could never afford.

The list of corrupt, greedy plod expands on account of their stupidity rather than their hunger, Julia.

Ciaran -three things;firstly you are a repetitive cock.

Second-he wasn't stealing steak to eat,it was to sell. It's what druggies steal. If he was hungry he would have stolen a sandwich which he could have eaten straight away, rather than frying a steak.

Thirdly if any of my colleagues commit a theft then they deserve to be prosecuted.I wouldn't defend them. You could only drum up three examples,of which one was found not guilty.(Unless you disagree with the not guilty verdict of course when it suits you).Massive list....

" .... stealing steak from Tesco" ...

Is he perhaps schizophrenic ?

Did he think for one nano-second that he was the "Little Chef" ? ... ;)

He had £9.33 in change in his pocket, and when he was asked how much he made, he told the officer: “I make more than you.”

So why steal?

Jonathan Taylor, defending, said his client’s benefits had been stopped and he had no money at all..

Yes he did - he had £9.33 in change.

So why were his benefits stopped? Failure to actively seek work? Failure to attend appointments? or was it that he really didn't need them as he had another source of income?

It's (anecdotally) harder in some areas than it used to be. That's all.

"I hope if you are ever in those circumstances..."

What, being a druggie or alcoholic waster? Well, I'm ahead of the game so far!

""Unemployed man dares to steal something to eat". He should be whipped and shipped out to Australia, Julia"

As I'm sure you realised, he didn't steal it to eat. And we can't send crims to Australia any more.

The whipping sounds like a damned good idea though!

"Yes he did - he had £9.33 in change."

That'll buy you steak, even in Waitrose!

Batteries and razors, yes. But who buys food from a bootsale?!?
