Who The Hell Elected You For This?

York could become the first city in Britain to ban private cars from driving in the centre.
Council chiefs have backed plans to end all ‘non-essential’ vehicle journeys into the city centre by 2023.
So, how can we remove you from power? Because no-one expects the council to have a say in deciding what's 'essential for the taxpayer'...

Oh, and before all you Green fruitcakes start laughing smugly, they mean you, too:
The ban will apply to both diesel and petrol cars. It is likely to apply to electric and hybrid vehicles too.
Heh! That wiped the smile off your face, eh?
Deputy council leader Andy D’Agorne said: 'A car-free and thriving city centre, which is accessible to those with limited mobility like blue badge holders, is achievable but only through detailed planning and engagement with those most affected by the proposals.’
And if your 'engagement' proves it's not what people want at all, and they'd rather you got on with the job of keeping the streets clean and emptying the bins? What then?

We can trust our newly elected Tory party folk to fight back, though. Can't we?
Critics said the move would make it harder for people to get to hospitals.
Conservative councillor Claire Hiscott said those on low incomes could be affected as ‘if you need to get to the hospital and you have a diesel vehicle you will face a hefty fine if you cross that zone in an emergency’.
*sighs* Modern Tories - keen, it seems, only to out-progressive the progressives...

On the basis that the centre of York is only the size of a small village, and has roads with at the very latest a medieval layout and widths, then it certainly isn't designed for the motor car, especially the latest SUV types. At least banning electric cars shows that the move isn't some nonesensical 'climate change' bullshit. Perhaps bikes should also be banned and the whole village pedestrianised.

But what about the transport that the roads were designed for? Perhaps ban horses, but allow donkeys?

"Ee, ba gum! T' smell o' donkey shit! When I were a lad, we lived on petrol fumes. You were lucky t' 'ave the waft o' diesel ..."

"Petrol? You were lucky. We 'ad ter make do wi' coal smoke ..."

Sadly it seems the 'Loony Left', mainly London, councils of the 80s were not an aberration but a blueprint.

The council is a LibDem/Green coalition: therefore there is no point in expecting any kind of pragmatism or realism from them. It appears that the Conservative councillor (one of only two on the council) is being critical of the bird-brained idea.

Ah well, that will kill the town centre if it actually happens. Then the question is, what will the council do when they lose the rates of town centre shops as well as the parking fees.

Are the greens totally stupid or what?

Ivan, all evidence so far suggests that the greens are, indeed, totally stupid.

Leaving real commercial matters in the hands of councillors will always be a problem for the citizens they purport to represent.

Tunbridge Wells has just found that out, with their vanity project of £110m of public money being voted out by a new party getting in the way of 'regress', making sure they can't just get away with it all any more.

And anyway, the last time we went to TW, we both achieved a screaming version of the 'threepenny-bits' so we won't go there again...

Just peruse these links, and draw your own conclusions as to why this sort of thing occurs:

There are many other such Quangos working behind the scenes - look at the "Our Partners" pages (or similar) on any of these sites. It's a full blown Cancer, eating away at any pretence of democracy we might have...

So they still intend to let disabled people drive in the city? Equality now means preferential, to certain groups

High street shops are already on the way out without this death blow...

"... then it certainly isn't designed for the motor car, especially the latest SUV types."

Nor were most towns. Should we regress?

"Then the question is, what will the council do when they lose the rates of town centre shops as well as the parking fees."

Well, the council tax can be raised, can't it? After all, it's not as if people will live elsewhere...

We were promised a bonfire. Where's the matches?

" Equality now means preferential, to certain groups"

And has done for quite a while.
